I solved the problem... My thinking may be wrong, but I pondered the fact that the shard was written years ago to the specs of the computers that existed at the time, so that the automatic requirements in the game would try to be using the new hardware capabilities of our current computers & fail ...

This has been resolved. I copied the dat folder into the Updates folder and it's all working for me so far. Thanks for all the help over the course of this thread. Will be happy to help anyone experiencing similar issues.

Sadly this August 2018 & this problem still exist... As a new Deep Island ...
