To whom this may concern...okay, enough formality. Hello there, Cyan legal department!
I would like to apply for a Fan Created Age License for a Japanese-themed museum and garden Age to house arts created by explorers (including pictures, creative writing, music, screenshots, etc) based on the Myst series. Of course, I understand that some (or all?) derivative content is off limits--so my question was, what would you find acceptable in terms of the Myst games that we could use to base derivative explorer arts off of? The idea would be that these works would ICly be created by explorers inspired by the Ages; we would not be claiming that the works were genuine artifacts from the actual places themselves.
Original Myst? Y/N/Can't say
realMyst? Y/N/Can't say
Riven? Y/N/Can't say
Uru (original w/o expansion packs)? Y/N/Can't say
The Path of the Shell expansion pack? Y/N/Can't say
To D'ni expansion pack? Y/N/Can't say
MO:UL exclusive content? Y/N/Can't say
(And I would assume that Exile, Revelation, and End of Ages are automatically off limits.)
May we add D'ni-themed architecture, provided that we do not reuse any of your textures, motifs, or building designs? It would be made clear in the Age that such architecture would be of modern explorer creation, and not manufactured by the D'ni. As an example of how we wish to proceed, consider the Japanese theme of the Age; we are not copying any specific Japanese building designs or motifs (except those broadly in use), but we are nevertheless producing the characteristic Japanese style, look, and feel. We would proceed in the same way to create architecture in the characteristic D'ni style. Y/N/Can't say
And, just because it can't hurt to ask, may we display artifacts from D'ni or from Ages in other acceptable Myst games along with the claim that they were in fact real artifacts from those Ages, and not simply new works created in the styles of those Ages by modern explorers? Y/N/Can't say
Well, that pretty much wraps it up. Was everything clear, and did you have anything to ask? If so, just drop me a line at _______________ and I'll be happy to tackle any of your questions. I will of course make sure that the answers to these questions are placed in the appropriate information repositories within the Guild of Writers and Guild of Maintainers, so that future Age creators won't have to make these same inquiries again and the Guild of Maintainers will know what to watch out for when they're inspecting fan Ages. Finally, I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to look this over; we all really appreciate it how willing you are to work with us on our projects.
