Newbie Question

Postby cedward1 » Sat Nov 06, 2010 7:52 pm

Have patience with me while I ask some stupid questions.

What's a shard? They sound fun, but I don't know what they are.

I already have Uru Complete Chronicles and Drizzle. I am in the process of trying to get the fan ages downloaded to my computer. Once I have done so, am I ready to start exploring? Is that all I need to experience the full potential of fan ages and this mysterious "other" Uru that I hear hints of in the forums and wandering around the Cavern?

A shard is an Uru server, pretty much like Cyan's "MOUL:Again" server.
When you are a member of a shard, you can join the server and play Uru with the other members, exploring the Cavern and Ages together. Thus a shard is also an on-line community.
There are private and public shards. To join a private shard, you must know its administrator and ask to be allowed in.
There are two public shards: UAM and DI. They are open to everyone and you will find information on how to join on this forum. Use the search function for quick results.

Yes, that's all you need! Most people prefer to play offline via this method. (You can also have Ages from Cyan's other games using the "Conversion" tab of Drizzle.) A few people prefer to play online, and as Chacal says, that's what a shard is. There is actually a 3rd public shard! I've got them all listed here: http://dusty.homeunix.net/wiki/Playing_Ages They use the Uam/Drizzle content so you get the same content either offline or online, though offline tends to work a little better. If you like, you can see screenshots and walkthroughs for all the fan Ages here: http://dusty.homeunix.net/wiki/UAM/Ages

Anyway, have fun exploring!

I wonder why this 3rd shard does not advertise itself.
They have a web page (in German) here: http://the-open-cave.net

I have tried it but it systematically crashed when linking to D'ni-Ritalgamin. :(
