TESTERS NEEDED - Low End Machines

Postby boblishman » Thu Feb 28, 2008 3:06 am

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if some of you with "lower-end" machines would check out the Journal in my age. (By "lower-end" I mean machines with not a great graphics card and a screen size of 15" or less).

The reason I am asking is that I am working with a "high-end" machine with a 19" X-Black Screen which gives me great definition of graphics. I also have all my graphics settings set to maximum so everything looks ok on my machine. But then, I was wondering, what would it look like on a machine with not such great graphics... and, more to the point, would you be able to read some of the "notelets" I have in my Journal? (This is very important as the information they contain will (eventually) be needed to solve the Age puzzles).

I have tried setting all my game graphic settings on low (low screen res, low textures etc) and I CAN still read the notelets ... BUT ... I have a 19" monitor ... so, I'm still not sure if they are "readable" on smaller screens.

Anyway, I would be grateful if you could let me know if you can read them on smaller screens with not-so-great grahics cards ... as this will mean I will have to change the Journal(s) if you can't.

(The Age is only about 10% completed but I don't want to continue working on it until I know that the Journal is readable by ALL players ...)

If you have the time, I would be grateful if you would download the Age and install it and check to see if the Journal is readable on your machine. Thanks! :)

(You will find the Journal by walking straight ahead when you link in, until you come to a ladder. Climb the ladder, and it is behind the backpack on the rock ledge. Thanks again for your help!)

You can download the Age HERE. Full installation instructions are included in the zip file

(Oh, and ignore the wierd stuff way up in the sky ... ... that´s "testing" material ;))

What did I tell you about using png for non-alpha things. ;)

No wonder this download was huge. :P

JPEGs ARE GOOD.

The trick is to develop ages with jpg-textures. :)

Over all, it looks pretty good. :) I think it's a matter of taste but, If I was making that age I'd make the textures a little less tiled, I'd rather a lower quality texture and it to look better from that balcony-thingy. :)

JPEG should not be used for textures actually, .png is a better choice, and for Ahra Pahts we've been using .tga files.

It doesn't matter what filetype you start with, because they are all compressed and stored in a unique filetype inside the .prp files, so the only difference is going to be how lossy the image is to start with. .png and .tga are both lossless, so they make for great textures. As well, .jpg doesn't have an alpha channel.

I would definitely encourage .png or .tga textures.

errr... actually, this was not a request to critique the age ... as I said, it´s about 10% completed ... and the texturing of the mainland is FAR from complete ...

What I actually want is know is about the Journal ...

(also, 10MB is not exactly HUGE ... plus, at the moment the texture.prp contains a lot of "unused" texture files that will come into play as the age developes... like I said, it´s only at the VERY early stages...)

As far as I was aware, all textures are converted to DXT format, so, like Paradox says, the better quality you start with, the better quality you finish with. JPG´s are not good in this case, and wont really make a significant difference to the final size of the prp file... the number of different textures however WILL ... THAT'S the trick, to re-use textures wherever possible

Ok, so the plugin now compresses the pics. That clears that up. :) Bob, your age is really cool. I like the part floating in the air the most(gotta love testing things :) ).

Keep up the good work!

wow, i love the age! I can't read the Journal tho... I hav... let's see... NVIDIA GeForce2 GTS/GeFORCE2 Pro O, and I used flymode a bit, and found a linkingbook, apparently to the same age that Pahkweh had laying around that wouldn't let me link to... are you planning on making these three ages connected, which one storyline or something?

I had a look on my high end system and saw that in the journal, particularly the page with a page stuck on a page, that the text was a bit blurred as well as the cover, the rest of the journal seemed fine.
