What about a texture exchange server?

General debates and discussion about the Guild of Writers and Age creation

*bump*

Well, it's about 9 months now since the server is up and running. But I'm a bit sad because it seems that it's not really used frequently.
People are sharing files like textures by uploading them to various filesharing services like rapidshare (without preview capabilities) spreaded all over the places, linking to other texture sites, and such.

What did we make wrong? Why aren't people using the server? Maybe we missed to announce it loud enough?
Or is there something really missing? I know, it's not the complete release I planned, but I was a bit discouraged by the low usage, so I was waiting with the inclusion of a forum and wiki.

To be honest, I made huge efforts to get sound files displayed in a regognizeable manner, with colored waveforms, representing the spectrum of the sound - and I'm really sad not even a single sound upload was done. (Btw, you really miss something if you don't test it ;) ).

Now I'm asking: How do we continue? I'm paying a monthly fee for this 40GB server and would like to get an idea if it's worth to keep it alive.

I think we should announce it as well on mystonline.com, in a thread called "Desperately seeking for photographers and musicians". Yes?

Your opinions, please.
;)

Agree that it's a bit sad. The repository definitely isn't getting the publicity it needs to be useful. I certainly think it deserves a link on the main page, at the top of the forums and in the wiki. I haven't seen that anything has been done since the "we've got plans" statement back in December. We certainly should get something worked out.

Yes this is sad, especially since this repository works perfectly well.
One reason for the lack of official visibility was that the guild councillors at the time wanted to start another official GoW repository, for some reason.

Since obviously this hasn't come through, I say let's make Tach's server the official repository.
I'm asking anyone who has admin rights to the GoW server (Hoikas) to add a link to the texture server on the home page and on the forum headers. And then let's start using it! I can help anyone having difficulties. We can report bugs and suggestions to Tach.

Tach, I have a suggestion for improvement: a function for uploading a batch of files. I have dozens of texture images from Japan and it would take me hours to upload them individually. It would be great to be able to do a batch upload!

Tachzusamm: could you provide the URL to your server again, please?

Perhaps you could make a post as you suggested, but on this forum. In your post, invite each Writer to submit at least one of their favorite textures that they're willing to release ownership of, as well as any sound files that they generated from scratch. Then, to generate wide publicity, submit your post as a news item on the Guild of Messengers site.

That should boost the activity on your server - at least, for a little while.
Can we rebuild it? Yes, we can - here's how.

Thank you for stepping in and posting the link, teedyo.

At first, I would like to answer some older posts:

teedyo wrote:[..]The license page currently reads:
There are two license models available to be chosen by the author when uploading his artwork.

I would amend that to read something like: "There are two license models available to be chosen by the author when uploading his artwork. If any persons or entities wish to use these works in a way not allowed by these licenses; they are encouraged to contact the author directly through PM on this site in order to obtain a specific grant of license."
[..]

Umm yes, but this would imply we already have a forum running on that server. Without that, PMs aren't possible because I think it's a waste of time to implement a full-features standalone (self-written) messaging system. So a forum (phpBB) should be added, although, well, it's not simply a "just-plug-it-in" process - some adaptions may be needed, both for design/site integration and the user database part (it would be nice that forum and server users share the same DB) to avoid the need of double registration. I must admit that I'm currently a bit lost with that - so help of any of you (php-saddle-fast forum admins) is welcome.

Carterhawk wrote:With the latest news from Cyan, the license they use for the game source should be an option as well, at least assuming they choose to use a real FOSS license and not make up a highly restrictive one. Assuming they go the route of GPL or some such, it might be nice to include that license as an option. I'd like to see also the ability to use CC licenses as all my photos are CC BY-NC-SA licensed, and I'd rather not make them any freeer than that in the event some entity decides they want to buy them.

Although a decision was made to have only 2 license models available (some people don't like to mess around with too many models when they are in an age building process - the discussion about that started around page 7), it's surely possible to add some license models.
CC could be easily added; regarding Cyan's license model we should wait until it's fixed. Or is it already fully published?

But I should remind that *extending* the number of license models may help those people who plan to use the work *outside* of MORE; for MORE itself, the current two models are sufficient in my opinion.

Now regarding the current posts:
Chacal wrote:Tach, I have a suggestion for improvement: a function for uploading a batch of files. I have dozens of texture images from Japan and it would take me hours to upload them individually. It would be great to be able to do a batch upload!

Mhhh... I would love to have such a batch upload as well. The only reason why I did not implement this right from the start is because http post does not allow multiple files to be uploaded. This is fixed in the http post scheme for security reasons.
But I know, there are several sites around which allow multiple files to upload; most of them do this trick with javascript/flash, for example using a script called SWFupload. It's a flash application. This could be integrated, although I assume it would take me not hours but days and weeks to fully understand the interfacing and adaptions needed for out purposes. And there are some issues with firefox, linux, MaxOS, which causes the script to block the browser or crash it.
Chacal, I'm asking myself if there will be others like you, willing to upload a bunch of files in one step; if yes, the work would be worth it.
Could I encourage you until we know more to upload only one selected or some few files per day? :D

I start smiling if you call it Tach's server, but I still believe this should be a GoW server. Not that I'm not proud of the actual status, but when I look into the future, it would be best if I'm not the only programmer and maintainer of this repository - especially if it will be really used and then needed.
I'm still willing to continue with development, but I fear I will not have so much time as in 2008 in the next months.

A bit history: Although I already asked for some help in programming and planning, it did not go the supposed way, so I kept the development under my control because I wanted the server to work.
Now it's in a working state, and I don't want to keep it secret, but I want to keep it running well.
So, if anyone seriously wants to step in, helping with development, and has a bit knowledge about cvs/subversion and such (I don't have), I'm going to release the sources, and I hope this project will grow.

Okay, in which area? General Discussion again, or in the Musicians area, or Artists area? General News?
Oh, and can't you do that? I am a bit biased, and I am sure your english is much better than mine. I sometimes don't find the right words.
(You can just say no, of course).

It needs a prominent place on the wiki index page.

I hope making the repository more visible can help with getting a greater number of diverse artists to reveal their presence -- almost all the talk here tends to revolve around the modelling aspect of age writing only, alas. :7

Thanks for you efforts Tach!

To do this right, I've added a discussion topic in the "Submitted Proposals" forums. Please add your comments on the wording of the proposal before I put it to a Guild vote.

This is OK with me. I'm already here for helping with maintenance and willing to spend the time. I can set up subversion too and take up other tasks such as backing up, monitoring, etc. But for programming, someone else has to chip in.
