Exploring MO:UL Offline

Post by Robert The Rebuilder »

A user named "ddb174" has posted his/her results of porting MO:UL worlds to Uru:TPOTS format on Uru Obsession forums:

http://www.uruobsession.com/forum/index ... 953bdde3d2

All legal dubiousness aside, it is amazing what they've done.

Speculative question: could "ddb174" in reality be Dustin Bernard (former Uru hacker and author of UruAgeManager)?
Can we rebuild it? Yes, we can - here's how.

*conjures up his mighty UO staff member powers to invocate the UO forum Admin CP and finds that..
You might just be right.
His email certainly looks like it could be his, but not enough to be sure.. If we could double check IP/email infos with his COBBS profile then we could be sure.
Also he does mention COBBS and Almlys in his posts.. That's enough for me to warrant a small inquiry. Unless someone does it before then I'll send him a PM tonight.

Nice catch Robert. :)

It would be great to have him back in the community - especially to see how far the Ahra Pahts project has progressed since his initial fractal sketches. [And to see how far the plug-in has progressed - of course!]

I always wondered what happened to Dustin. It'd be nice to have him back.

Aww, it sounds like everyone has relatively fond memories of me! It's mutual, in any event!

As I recall, the name 'Dustin' was taken in Moul (I came in very late, at which point it was clear Moul was shutting down), so I used 'ddb174', which was my University ID.

Now that Cyan et.al. aren't quite as clawful, I could also upload&GPL the source for the last version of UAM, from which you might be able to scavenge something for ULM. It's not a problem, so just let me know.

Another project I wrote some time ago, which might be useful, is a proxy webserver written in Java, which runs on the localhost, and serves up files for various official Myst-related web-sites. It includes all the files for TheRivenJournals, RivenElementary(if you remember that one), the Myst4 online game, the Myst5 online game, and a smattering of official sites, like the (original?) Myst web-site that had those great screenshots not available in game. Obviously, distributing those files is quasi-legal (archive.org is in this boat), not unlike the upcoming situation with making Drizzle user-friendly (Drizzle is the name of the Moul->Pots utility). Both involve the duplication of copyrighted material that was made available for free online: a legal grey-area at the moment.

By the way, Ahra Pahts look fantastic! Very beautiful while making due with few polygons! That nexus area works really well, I think.
