The "forgotten" Guild of Linguist

Postby sonic'son » Thu Jul 31, 2008 7:00 pm

Hello, i have a stupid question in my bag (sorry for my English)

First, don't be afraid, i'm completely for the guilfofwriters and age creation, and with my friends we will finish our age in a few month :)
But one question is still in my head ... (yes i have a head... mmm.. a ... yeah :) )

Why the Guild of Linguist is not involve ? (maybe i'm wrong, but i think about the D'ni linguistic Fellowship)

Because if you reverse the "chain" of age creation, you have something like that :

1) Explorer or D'ni people, exploring, living, visiting the age... This is good, but before
2) Mainteners are testing the age ... This is good, but before :)
3) Writers(us) (specificity of our situation) "DRAW" the age (like god ;) but not so much like a writer )

but maybe before we should have

4) Linguist look if the description leads to an age who might be safe or not
5) Writers "WRITE" the age in a description book (kor-mahn) , generally in D'ni

The number 3) is quite strange ...
Ideally i wish it would be possible to substitute it by a big random software ... linked to the 3D software...
Just like.. when you choose your avatar and you clik on random... but instead to clik on random , you describe the avatar that you want , and then it make it ...

This kind of software is nearly impossible to make ...

But do you think, that before to draw an age, it would be good to send to a linguist a book where we write what we want to make ?
(problem is that we need more precision about the ART by Watson ... but at the same time it would be good, that one a the few employe of cyan gives us some lesson :) or qualified D'ni speakers like Domareh)
And more people in the age creation would be involve (and not only the modellers, because everybody can try to learn D'ni,
sometime easyer than learn blender :) )
Conclusion : 3 guilds could actively cooperate to create ages(Gow, GoMa, Linguist) , and closest of what the D'ni did in the past ... no ?

or

stupid idea , age creation is hard enough :)

sorry for this question ... :?

have a nice day

As a member of the DLF, I'd love a more IC approach to Writing. I think making each Descriptive Book actually readable would add a ton to the immersive value, and though it would be a huge amount of work I personally wouldn't mind working on it. The problem is we just don't have enough vocabulary to carry a conversation, let alone describe an Age. Not a lot of D'ni words have been officially released.

Not to mention that if I recall correctly, the descriptive and linking books didn't use the D'ni written language, but rather a completely different set of symbols called the garohevtee or something like that.

Yes, great symbols - I guess that means the books are written ALL IN UPPER CASE. ;P

yeah i didn't remember well, but maybe its a mix of D'ni and the other ? ...

well, the important is that something is written before any age ...

hope we will learn more about that, in order to be closer to the past of D'ni

Actually, on a related note, I have noticed the Guild of Linguists was really left by the way side when the guilds were created (and even a little before that). As an ex-linguist who stopped working there due to lack of anyone else's interest, I don't understand what happened here. From a slightly OOC perspective, I see a Guild of Linguists as being a very important guild, and would even go so far as to say that they deserve a place in the current top 5 guilds created by the DRC, ousting the Guild of Cartographers (sorry guys, but at this point, especially since Cyan announced that there would be no new ages of theirs, there really isn't much practicality in having a GoC with nothing to map). I really would like to see some more linguists returning to the guilds (or at least lurking less :D) so we can evolve D'ni a little more. Especially now that we have Cyan's ear more than ever before, we should try to get some info on recent D'ni language headlines.

I posted at the DLF a while ago, and I would love to see the D'ni Language Research Project start again. Unfortunately we need RAWA for that, and the site has been down for a while.

Actually the GoC still has an important role to play: making their beautiful maps for US, the Fan Age Creators.

Just because Cyan won't be putting out any new content soon doesn't mean that the GoC should go the wayside, quite the other way around.

As it's been announced that the GoA (Archivists) will be working with RAWA, and will be part of the FCA Panel, I don't see why a Linguist Guild can not also be in a "official" capacity. No one said that there can only be 5 guilds.

As the Messengers are fond of saying: "See a need. Fill a need."

The Importance of Linguists:

Although the ages I am working on no longer have inhabitants, there still might be papers and such laying around. I doubt these papers would have been written in anything I could read and understand. Could the guild of Linguists be a sub guild to one of the other guilds and thus work within the current setup?

Yep,

but is this for ever ?

Or cyan might help us to learn these langages, to be closer from the D'ni Art ? ...

Because i still repeat :

- i'm happy that we can "draw" ages ...

but

- i would feel closer from d'ni culture if we could "write" ages (and then draw if we dont have other means)

what do you think ?

Do you think you would like to change the way of working if it would be possible to cooperate with some writers before blenderers ? (if we have enough knowledge of d'ni langages ? ...)

is it something to ask to cyan ?

Of course there will be more work than now but what do you prefer :

plenty of age write in that way

or

a few less ages but writed closer to D'ni culture ? (i repeat if it possible to know more about D'ni :P )

see you
