MOAR contest: Discussion

Back in my election I was talking about starting a new concept-artist geared contest. Well, here it is.

MOAR stands for MOdeler ARtist. The contest's goal is to improve age quality by rewarding modelers who can work off concept art and by rewarding (and identifying) good concept artists.

Here's the general flow:

As you can see, there will be two winners and the whole contest could take a while--it's really two contests.

The artists can only submit one picture of a place. This picture will be judged by intriguingness mostly. No part of the art can be labeled--the picture should clearly show everything important. The view must be drawn as if you're standing there (ie. no map-view).

A group of modelers will have to model the place pictured. Generally, no scripting, sound or story should be included. The winner will be judged on model quality and how loyal the place is to the artist's general feel of the place.

Ideally, the place shown in the artist's art should be only a very small part of an age so that the modeler's don't have too hard of a time.

This contest isn't really starting now. This is just meant to test the waters and field suggestions and comments. If there aren't enough people who are interested then the contest won't be started very soon (or ever, if there never are enough interested people).

Heh, lately it seems that the GoW is all about contests :)

Still, I think it's an intriguing idea - we need to improve in the artistic area, and this could be a nice way to work it out - if there's enough animo.

I'd love to partake in this as a modeler. So I'm all for in.

I can model, dunno if i'll have time though.

Its kind of a step back to have a contest that isn't as fully featured as an entire Age, but still need to make sure of polygon count for applying such a model into an Age.

I did a rather complex one a few weeks back if a shipping crate.

I don't see this as a step back. It has potential to develop team working, enabling people to focus on key skills and spark ideas off each other.

Nice concept, Lontahv.

Come on, Lon. You were struggling to come up with an excuse to molest us with lolcat speak, you might as well admit it. ;)

Looks like our new councelor takes his committment seriously. :)

Sounds like a really good idea! I actually want to enter this one so I will refuse to be a judge.

Now to hope this doesn't take off to quick so I can find time to actually do the work (and all the other work I wanted to do... :( ).

I'll be entering on the concept art side btw.

BAD, I want a good number of contestants signed up before this thing actually starts. Don't worry getting enough will probably take a while since everyone's pretty swamped with RL (including me).

Oh also, having the name be lolspeak was a complete accident. The choice was between ArMo and MoAr. I picked MoAr. :D

I love this idea! Let me see if I understand though.

So first there is one contest for the artists alone. This results in one winning piece of art. Then there is another contest, in which 3d modelers make their own version of the age depicted in that piece of art. Is that right? Or is it more like any of the art from the first contest can be used in the second one?
