Spamers

Postby 4runner » Wed Jun 24, 2009 5:02 am

Can't any thing be done to keep this filth off the site. It seem's to be the same name on all of it. Also the spam that this person keeps putting up. Is there no way to ban this kind of person.

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3040 I believe they're doing everything they can. I know what you mean though, alot of the spammers have the same profile picture... maybe is some massive spam organization targeting the GoW! :o

If you report the threads, they will be dealt with. Unfortunately, nobody has the time to sit in front of a computer every second of the day watching for spam posts on GoW.

We have used IP bans, which has cut down the number of spammers dramatically, but we need to be careful with IPs not to accidentally ban whole providers or countries (believe me, it has happened on other forums in the past). There's no way to ban a user based on avatar picture.

The issue with IP bans is also that there are many people with dynamic IPs (especially in Europe), where banning the IP will not only be ineffective against the spammer, but also ban anyone else who randomly has that IP.
I prefer e-mails to "diafero arcor de" (after adding the at and the dot) over PMs.

The simplest and most effective cure is this:

viewtopic.php?p=33010&f=10#p33010

JWPlatt, I am sure someone from the admins already read that post - I now read it about 5 times since you link there whenever possible  . I doubt that is necessary, though I agree that such a simple question should help against bots - if they are bots.

It will filter out the register bots, but not the register sweatshops.

Almost. I registered just now because I wanted to report a spam thread. Aren't I nice?

I'm trying to keep my reminder-to-spam-complaint ratio reasonably low. ;)
