I think it would be a good idea to modify the sidebar* so that it contained Navigation links(See Here for an example). Having navigation links makes it easy for users to see what the wiki has to offer. Having a contribute section on the sidebar would also be a benefit imo as it would allow people to easily see what pages are needed, what pages are a work in progress, etc.
*MediaWiki:Sidebar is the pagename that allows people with the right privaledges to modify the Sidebar.
