Kaelis' Models

Postby kaelisebonrai » Mon Jun 16, 2008 8:58 pm

Hi there.
I'm just creating a topic to show various models I'll be making for Uru, It'll be a general showcase of various models I've made, and so on..

I'll also be adding .blend files of these models, under the terms of the GNU General Public License Version 3 or Later.

Please note, using any of these models will require you to release your age under the terms of the GNU General Public License Version 3 or Later, as well as distrbute the .blend file of the age.

Here is the first, an open book. =)

Nice models.

Are you sure that GPL is the best license for it though?
Effectively it's forcing everyone who uses the models ("static linking" in GPL terms) to go GPL and distribute their blend file with the age....
That could be problematic with regards to ULM/spoilers/dat-folder cluttering
Perhaps LGPL or an Artistic license more focused on your artwork itself would be better suited...
One day I ran through the cleft for the fiftieth time, and found that uru held no peace for me anymore.

What can I say, I'm a bit of a open source fanatic. =P

I have indeed already thought about the troubles with that, but, decided that GPL has always been the best option. Plus, the Axe and the Asteroid have both been released in open source game development projects, before, licensed under the GNU GPL3 (or later), so, releasing them as anything else for use here... would be a bit.. remiss. These models are indeed, mine, but, I released them under the GPL before. Its perfectly permissable for me to change the license, since I have not recieved any contributions to these files.. but, none the less..

New.. well, not so new, but, have a render, now..

This model has been (jokingly) referred to as the "Nuke 'Shroom"

EDIT: Thought I should note: this one has no textures =) nor is it UVmapped..

EDIT2: The Vase, a very old model, i jigged it a little, though.. it only has materials, no textures.. and not terribly good materials, either, I have to note.

Beautiful models.

Taken out of context, the asteroid is funny...

Raise your hand if you did NOT think it was a potato at first.

Thanks Chacal!

And, I have heard it mentioned that the asteroid reminds people of a potato >.>

Here's another one..

This one only has materials but is uvmapped, to make it easier to bake the textures to the scene itself, I should probably re-upload the asteroid, with materials, and ready for texture and lighting baking..

Kaelis,

Can you please explain to us how the GPL applies here? Does using one of your models, if we do not change it beyond positioning or something, mean that we have to release our BLEND files, in your interpretation of it? If so...that's really not reasonable to ask of an Age creator at all times.

I'm afraid it does require the age to be released under the GPL, along with the .blend files, yes.

I'm not sure how this is not reasonable, as the GPL is a perfectly fine open source license...

Not to mention impossible if you release an age through the ULM.
