Translating Formats / Possesive
Posted: Mon Sep 06, 2010 4:29 pmOk, I ran into a problem while translating this item, and I can't figure out how to put all of this into the translation string.
In the Finnish language, the possessive is written by adding letters to the end of the word. And which letters to add, depends on the word itself. I'll give some examples.
English: Tiina's car
Finnish: Tiinan auto
English: Viktor's car
Finnish: Viktorin auto
That's how it generally goes* when we're talking about proper names posessing something. When we're talking about things possessing something, then it gets even more complicated, as the possessive sometimes changes the original word itself (like, 'meri' (ocean), 'meren' (ocean's) or 'tähti' (star), 'tähden' (star's)).

[*] Sometimes names are bent so that the possessive changes the original word, if the person with that name prefers it, but I think it's okay to ignore that since it's still fine to bend it the way that proper names are generally bent.
