My journey with installing the Deep Island thus far (so that you can understand how a new writer might be viewing the process):
Originally, a few days ago, i downloaded, installed and ran Uru Live and started to enjoy the Ages of Myst for the first time... I was lead to this forum by talking with folks I found there.
After a lot of digging and looking I found that I needed to get hooked into the Deep Island shard to see user created content and create my own. Yay!
I found information telling me that I needed a clean install of the program. This information was a little difficult to understand especially after reading info on the other site that was recommended reading for Windows 7 users. I couldn't understand what CC or TPOTS was, and was confused in thinking I needed to install some other plugin or something called TPOTS in addition to Deep Shard. In short, I was a mess of confusion.
I decided to look up TPOTS online and came up with some security company, but when I did a search again also using the word Myst, I was able to discern that TPOTS stood for "The Path of the Shell", which I gather is a version of Myst Online ... or a particular release. More confusion ensued when I tried to decide if I had that, or if I had to buy it separately. Eventually I just thought that perhaps TPOTS and CC were not so important, and that what I downloaded as Uru Live was just fine BUT ....that I would possibly need to reinstall it ... to somehow ... make ... it ... a clean install?
So that's what I did. Since I wasn't worried about how much exploring I had done in the event I would lose it .. I uninstalled Uru Live ... and I reinstalled it.
Then, I followed more instructions by downloading the Deep Island zip, unzipping it into a separate directory, and then copying those files directly into the main folder of my supposedly new Uru Live. I continued following the instructions by double clicking on Uru.exe. This provided me with an error. It said something about not able to install or some such thing (sorry I cant be more specific, but I am further enough along in the process now I can't remember).
At this point I thought ... well maybe I just need to pop into the client via my desktop shortcut and see what happens ... maybe Deep Island will load in fine with no more worries. What I faced was puzzling. When I fired everything up, it seemed like I was just back to where I left off in the game with the few books I had collected on my hut's shelf as usual and the buddies I had added still saved like I hadn't even uninstalled the previous program. So I assumed this information was garnered from an online database and my game updated appropriately. But after some exploring I decided that this was not where I needed to be because i couldn't find a Writer's Guild neighbourhood or GoW nexus that suitably would prove to me that I was in the Deep Island Shard.
I went back into my program folder and decided to try to double click Uru.exe again for posterity sake and had the same result as before. But not to be disuaded I then right clicked Uru.exe and chose "run as administrator", which yielded results. I was, after a false start or two, able to successfully log in using my GoW forum name and password. It seemed that I was not going back into the old game I had played with. Yay!
After clicking "PLAY", what happened next was what seemed to be a series of updates, which I assumed and still assume to be the bulk of material that makes up the Deep Island shard ... ages, programming .. whatever is new. But ...
Then right at the end of loading ( i know it was at the end because I watched the percentage downloaded faithfully) it hung. The program became unresponsive. I decided to close it and try again. The same result was had the second time, when instead of clicking "PLAY", I clicked "OK" instead. I tried a third time, pressing "PLAY" as I did the first time, and I let the program just sit in unresponsive mode thinking that maybe it would eventually respond.
It was at this point, that I recieved the error window pop up saying:
Uru.exe has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
(close program)
This is where I am now, looking at this error window, which I left there while I typed this message. I will now click on the close program button ...
It's gone. I have looked in my processes running in windows and there are no extraneous processes from Uru running.
If it's any help, I am using Windows 7.
Any ideas?
