This time I'm going to follow the installation steps as usual, but I won't install the KI patch yet. I believe that might be causing the problem.

Also since I have Windows Vista and cant choose 7 as compatibility, going to see what XP SP2 does.

Shouldn't it be C:\users\<yourname>\Saved Games\URU?
Yes, I meant "anything inside C:\Users\<YourName>\". Savd Games is a good idea, but if you like it on the desktop, go ahead... ;-)

When installing a DI client, *do not* install *any other patch* - do not even tell Drizzle where the DI client is located. After performing a clean instalation (which you can back up, if you do no want to take out the CDs again), just extract the DI client setup zip-file into that folder, and launch Uru.exe. If auto-updating is working, Uru.exe will do all the rest.

Has this problem been solved? because I'm having the same issues, same error box and everything...
The installation SEEMS to work. I'm able to log in, create a character, and then the updates seem to run fine. but then, as the game itself is about to start, I get this:

(Edit: I realized that by using steam, there is no way to uninstall TPOTS as per the instructions. I ignored that, but that might be the issue. if so, how would I work around?)

Tried a re-install, this time skipping steps about naming files, as the DI patcher has files appropriately named. Same issue, same error codes. reboot, cleaned the registry, ditto. renamed files, files regenerated upon update, same error. One at a time I turned comparability mode for uru.exe, urusetup.exe, and uruexplorer.exe to winXP sp2. same error. dropped graphics to nothing. same error. I'm trying everything here, guys.

So, Just for fits and giggles, I extracted the DI patcher, and ran the uru.exe from there without a preexisting installation. And it gave me the exact same error I had been getting before! further, the total file size is the same as the final file size WITH a complete installation, suggesting the only issue might be a broken registry key. I'm not averse to going in to my registry and tweaking... IF I know what I'm looking for.

Again for fits and giggles, ran a clean install, following all instructions, (except for uninstalling TPOTS, which I cannot do) and then running in safe mode. Surprisingly, it crashes BEFORE the update process. As near as I can tell this has nothing to do with steam, and everything to do with Vista. Yes, I know I should upgrade to win7, but until I get a hard copy, I can't, due to issues with changing architecture. till then, help a girl out?

Seems to be working now....
1) clean install following instructions listed. Don't worry about uninstalling TPOTS.
2) set compatability mode for URU.EXE to WINDOWS 95.
3) be sure to use this as your launcher every time.

time will tell if this is a permanent fix.

Glad you got it working :)
Now I'll link other Steam users to this thread in the future :D

So, My install is working, it seems. It changed compatibility to windows 98, which sped things up. It still crashes a lot, and Ghareesen is incompletable (which, if I've read the forums right, is a shard-wide problem) but it appears to be functional, if not very stable.
