Fan Age exped: D’ni Location Contest [spoilers]

Vothol Show Spoiler

On the 39th expedition of the Fan Ages Touring Club we visited the D’ni Location (Creation) Contest ages: Vothol Gallery by Rustee, Age Maps Gallery by Egon, Sholek’s Temple by Whilyam. We also visited D’ni Temple (Area One) by Matthornb. See Minasunda’s video!

The D’ni Location (Creation) Contest was held in August 2010, with the intent to prove that fan authors can in fact create good, inspired, canon-friendly, immersive locations in D’ni. The judges were kaelisebonrai, Paradox, Tahgtahv, Tweek, Whilyam; the contestant were Fehnir’s House, Sholek’s Temple, Vothol Gallery, Tsoidahl Prad, Age Maps Gallery. Two of those we visited in previous expeditions. The rules were the following:

  • The location must be in the Age of D’ni (Earth) and be D’ni-related;
  • The location must be Neighborhood sized or smaller;
  • Cyan’s artwork (textures) were allowed when it falls to staples of D’ni;
  • Cyan’s models were allowed only when those are a staple of D’ni.

Vothol Gallery, the winner of the contest, is a dark but relaxing circular space, with columns shaped like pen nibs and a central column wrapped onto itself like a shell. The view from the window is a bright orange lake, possibly one of the secondary caverns.
The age is located on one of the private islands. The original purpose of the place is unknown, but was obviously owned by the Guild of Writers. At the time of the Fall it was likely a showcase of ages for everyone to visit.
It is thought to have been a gallery because when it was first found there were a number of “paintings” depicting vistas from various ages, as well as “age scopes”, metal spheres with panoramic view of ages; unfortunately most of them are non-functional. There were also several books that looked similar, as though they were ready to be distributed to libraries.
The music was composed by Ben Powell. The Gehn shard has been hosting a slightly updated version (along with Fehnir’s House and Tre’bivdil from the DAWN contest) since 2012, with the globes replaced by paintings.

Age Maps Gallery consists of four interconnected circular rooms (plus a dead end) with maps from Ahra Pahts and Ae’gura, with space for more. The room in the middle is a small cave with orange water and two crossed bridges. The music is the theme from the alternate vault in Kadish Tolesa.
There is actually an extra room and corridor, but they can only be reached using flymode.

Sholek’s Temple, or Tosholek, is the private house and stage of D’ni dramatist and prophet Sholek, born in 7318 DE (339 BC). He was denied a guild education, but rose to popularity for a while. A journal describes in details his life.
He had Tosholek built in an isolated mini cavern outside the City proper. It has an artificial lake made with an automatic feeding system, which is why it is brighter than the main lake. A corridor leads to a walkway over the lake and to an auditorium, where Sholek held his speeches. A crack on the railing on the link-in area allows to go swimming in the lake. On the walls surronding the lake there are two paintings by Tweek, depicting a young Sholek; the snake is a ‘vasara’, native to the Vasarahn age.
Using flymode, just outside the age there are two floating “HAX!” red messages.
Unfortunately, at the time of this writing there seems to be a bug that prevents more than about 8 people to link into this age.

D’ni Temple (Area One) was not part of the competition, but was released a few months after, although work on it started before. It has three areas, the tree room, the nave and the gazebo. On a wall in the nave there are the D'ni words "cheto eflaihn (⇒ eflin) tsahnosh" written in reverse, roughly meaning "location order permanently". Above the nave there is a small balcony with a table and a giant (non-readble) book.
The age was a demo of a larger age still in the works, along with a few others.

A recording of the Twitch stream is available.

Next time (November 22 at 11:00 KIT) we will visit a few ages from Ametist's students: Sev 1, Sev 2, Sev 3, Sev 4. Until then!

The Vothol Gallery's reflecting sphere shows a beautiful age, but which age? It appears to be a cemetery. Kor suggests it's in the Cleft caldera, but it's too big (relative to MYST V dimensions).
