Flymode

As of version 3.0 of the Offline KI, flymode is planned to work a bit differently. The reason is that I personally absolutely hate the fact the space toggles between moving up and down - I often want to go up just a little bit, and then I have no choice but first go down, then go up and hope it's correct now - and usually, I have to do that 2 or 3 times. For that reason, the current test version of the Offline KI 3.0 changes the usage of the Escape key: It can still be used to enable flymode (as an alternative to the /flymode KI command), but once flymode is enabled, Esc is used to toggle the behaviour of the space bar. To leave flymode, you have to type "/noflymode" (I could add "/nofly" as alternative, but if I added "/fly" to enable it that would overwrite the Easter egg we took from MOUL).
Now I already got two people saying they prefer the old behaviour. What do you think - should the current behaviour be kept or changed, or do you have some idea which is as convenient as the old one regarding enabling/disabling and removes the (in my eyes) nasty space bar toggling? Unfortunately I could not find any additional key in Uru which I could use for down movement.

How about the PageUp and PageDown keys to fly up or down?

good idea but it might be an issue for some laptops that don't have those keys.

Oh well, forget it. PageUp and PageDown are not mapped separately. The numpad + and - are mapped (to kKeyCamZoomIn = 37, kKeyCamZoomOut = 38) but they have the same issue for laptops.

I agree with difaro and so chose the second solution but agree with D'lanor that neither is the correct solution.

While a toggle is a good option in flymode would it be possible to map any two keys we already use , and . for strafe left and right how about u for up and d for down.

The down to go up is a real pain especially when I am trying not to land inside a wall.

I just don't see a reason to 'try' to fix something that 'you' personally don't care for, and several others have figured out and are comfortable with...maybe 'later'...

This is a discussion not a instruction, my intention was to highlight a difficulty and suggest a solution.

You are correct this may be a maybe later thing.

I choose to mention it now at a time when someone else posted a poll to see how people felt.

If needs be I shall live with the status quo it's no big deal. Is there really any harm in my saying "Hey I find this fiddly"? :)

If that turns out to work, I could still keep the old space bar behaviour (to be sued by laptops or people not reading the announcement :D ) and use "+" and "-" for up and down. Of course, this might have weird effects if the keys do also still apply to the camera ;-)
Do you know of any more mapped keys we could possibly use? I tried the F-keys, but that didn't work.

Who is that "you" in your post? In case it's meant to be me, how do you think I don't care? I care very well and frequently use flymode (maybe more often than I should), and it annoys me each time, so I decided to try and find a solution. And I was not sure what others thought about it, how "comfortable" they are with the current state, or if they felt like me. Just because you like it, that doesn't mean everyone does, and this thread serves to find that out. If the vote stays as it is now, with more than twice as much people voting for "keep the old way" than "change it", I won't change nothing, or revert the changes I did in my local development version.

How about changing the flymode in the new KI version and after a while starting a new poll to find out how people like it?

Sometimes you don't know if you like something before you tried out. (With "you" I mean "man" in German :D )

In case they really don't like it, you could change it back again (assumed that this would not be too much effort).

I like the idea of leaving the space bar as a toggle for those that like the status quo, and adding something like + and - as an up or down (but the - is above the +, so we'd have to hit - to to up and + to go down).

I too find it tedious to have to go down before I can move up a bit more, so Diafero, add me to the list of those who would appreciate a change.
