Bug: Computer Restarts

Postby Flynt » Fri Dec 14, 2012 2:56 pm

First, I appologize if this is a hardware problem on my end, but it doesn't seem so; anyway....

I've been popping in and out of Gehn a good bit recently, primarily hoping to run into someone who can pellet drop and get me to the Dec sparkle (no luck yet). In the meantime, I've played around Minkata and the Pods. While in Gehn (but not everytime), my computer would simply restart, clearing saved passwords, etc (e.g. the login to this site). After going in/out of MOULa, DI, and Gehn, it seems to only happen while in Gehn, which suggested to me a software rather than harware issue. Prior to my posting this, I've made several attempts to narrow down the problem, but I'm at a loss other than my best uneducated (emphasis on uneducated) guess is that it's tied to the Pod ages and/or Java.

Since I'm no means tech savy, additional info that may be helpful: running Windows XP, typically stream from Windows Media Player while online, and always have an Explorer 8,x browser window open.

Leaving the country for a week and was going to test some more upon return prior to this post; however. someone in the MOULa cavern suggested that I go ahead and post my issues since the problem could be serious.

Lastly, some additional observations while I've been running around: a) the Eder Gira baskets still aren't working right. I had earlier left the two upper baskets and completed by hugging the side wall, but when I placed them to see if it'd been fixed, they still disappear upon linking out/in. b) when linking into one or more of the pods, I'm linking into mid-air and then fall down to the floor. Don't recall this to be the case in either MOULa or DI.

UPDATE:

After hanging out in MOULa for a good while, I left and started Gehn, which stated that there was an explorer already there. Feeling the Dec sparkle in my grasp, I tried to login only for my computer to restart right as my Relto appeared. More evidence of some software issue.

If it's important, that login attempt was the first time my avatar picture appeared in the login screens. It had always been a blank box.

In additional observations, I forgot: c) The only time I'm now getting the Relto dive is when linking out of the Pods, and then not everytime.

I occasionally find that I've been logged out of this website too. I've lost the login for Gehn on occasion but only when a new version came in.

re the pods: I've just been in all the pods this evening and didn't fall or drop. I've not experienced this at all.

I went back to my old avvies to check for missing fish baskets and found the pair of baskets were often missing, but I can't remember when they went - it could have been older versions of Gehn. I've placed the baskets in position for my newest avvie and will see what happens to them.

I don't have or recognise your other issues, I'm afraid.

Happy to do a pellet drop if you can catch me, but I'm not around much - I think we're all waiting for a new version (and the Tre'bivdil stained glass) before getting back down to testing. Alternatively, if you get tired of waiting, there are plenty of posts on this forum about creative ways of cheating.....

Have you tried searching for newer drivers for your video card? In Windows XP, when the video card driver crashes, the computer will (by default) restart. There's a setting somewhere--I can't remember where exactly because I haven't used Windows XP in over a year--that lets you disable the auto restart and see the BSOD instead. Windows Vista (and later) are a lot better at coping with these crashes, thankfully.

I still have no idea what is wrong with the Gira fish baskets. I've forward-ported Skoader's physics changes for the next update, and I'm curious to see if that helps the issue any.

probably me, checking out your issues (and collecting feathers) - what a shame you crashed. :( I missed this comment when I posted earlier.

Berberis's fish baskets are still in place this morning :) .

Okay, Tsar's suggestions to override the video card crash in XP, played around a bit, and then left on vacation. Of course my computer completely crashed while I was gone (so perhaps it was a hardware problem all along). New computer with Windows 8 (which I hate thus far), and now I'm getting the PhysX problem discussed in an earlier thread. MOULa seems to work fine and my video drivers are up to date.

I can't install my external video card at this point, so I'm using the Intel HD Graphics that came with the computer. Any ideas as to the PhysX issue?

Your quick reply and patience is appreciated, but the suggested download didn't work. My external video card is a GeForce 9 series, so hopefully I can get it installed and the provided update will work.

If I'm missing something here, I apologize.

Hmm... What do you mean by "didn't work?" The download exploded and you couldn't get the installer, the installer itself blew up, or the installer worked fine but Uru is still giving an error? If there's an error displayed somewhere, can you post it for me?

PhysX (namely the 2.x variety) is a very frustrating beast. I can't wait to throw it away.

Running the update from the link provided didn't eliminate the "No PhysX installed" message; however, learning my way around Windows 8 led me to try clicking the "Run as administrator" option and this allowed Gehn to run the PhysX installer and now both the shard and MOULa run. The movement and mouse isn't smooth in Gehn, but hopefully I'll figure that issue out. Other than these hurdles, the new installer worked well.

Deep Island has video and sound issues (i.e. blank screen and choppy sound), so I'll keep playing around with similar settings.

Not any happier with Windows 8.
