You can stop investigating it (unless you find something new, of course) as I've already tracked it down and made a fix for it.

The KI freezing up is a result of Uru ceasing execution of a script that crashes, and since the KI is a huge monolithic script this tends to happen to it a lot. In this case it was trying to send Unicode to the tree list using the wrong function, one which doesn't actually support Unicode. Therefore, this only manifests on languages which have the device name containing things outside the basic ASCII.
We may see little bugs like this happen in other places, so keep an eye out and let me know!
