Probably very little. Basic modeling hasn't changed in the package in years. There are some new tools, and its more efficient, but its not like its twice as easy to use or something. So if you have 7 there's no huge pressing need to get the newer version. Don't get me wrong the newer packages do have advantages with the new tools...but its not a huge advantage.

The Reason I am asking, I just checked the AutoDesk Site, and they have several options for 2010, a 30 day trial, $1.750 or a student version. A bit pricy for me and Max 7.1 seems to work ok even thought they are not publishing it any longer so it can be difficult to get, it is a lot cheaper.

If Max 7 is working fine for you, there's no reason to switch versions. As you noticed, 2010, 2011, and 2012 all have student versions, which is a good way for some people to obtain free legal copies.

There's unfortunately no good way for non-students to get their hands on any Max version. For that we need PyPRP2 to be actively developed, so Blender can be a useful option for CWE work.

I'm not sure what would cause this. I'll see if I can reproduce it on my end.

You're still using Max 2011?

I did think of one reason having a newer version might be beneficial. No one is currently compiling the v7 plugin so its static. Currently that's not a problem because not much has been changed. But if the developers start to make major changes in the plugin or add features to the engine, you wouldn't get those. So having a newer version gets you the latest version of the plugin. Not a big deal right now...but in time it might be.

I've confirmed that in Max 2011, texture information is not saved with the Plasma Layer. Can anybody test for Max 2010 and/or 2012?

EDIT: It's worse than that. It looks like nothing you set on a layer is saved at all.

Looks like I've (finally) got it fixed. I'll have a new bundle out this evening with the updated max plugin.

I've just posted 902C, which fixes this bug.

The fix likely makes files saved with 902B or earlier incompatible with the 902C max plugin. There doesn't seem to be any way to fix this issue without breaking compatibility with older files. I apologize for any inconvenience.
