David's Journey

Postby Gehn, lord of ages » Tue Dec 16, 2008 3:24 pm

Shorah. I'm not exactly sure where to put this, so feel free to move it if it is in the wrong spot. With the latest information from Cyan, I have decided to launch my Uru expansion pack project, now called "David's Journey". Currently, I'm trying to assemble a team to begin work on the concept and plan (here called the Council, just because it sounds cool).

David's Journey

Purpose

David's Journey is a fan based expansion into the D'niverse, specifically into URU. David's Journey is an ambitious project that will use the talents of many in the Myst fan community to make a Cyan quality expansion for URU. In scale, David's Journey will be approximately the size of tPotS or To D'ni.

People

The Council - Must have three recommendations and some masterpiece, all sign NDA's, may form new lordships for the council, appoint people to positions, and make small and large decisions.

Master of the Council - Chairman and President. Approves of promotional material. May discuss some plot material on forums in order to prevent confusion. Organizes workforce and makes final decisions for the council.

Master of Relations - Approves promotional material. May discuss some plot and Age material on forums in order to prevent confusion. Organizes legal and promotional material, including communications with Cyan, release of screenshots and video, informational releases, and trailer releases.

Master of Programming - Manages the technical requirements. Organizes and leads technical department. Decides and explains what is possible with the resources.

Master of Art and Age Creation - Manages Conceptual Art and age modeling. Is responsible for the design of ages. Organizes and leads artistic department (texture, modeling, sound, music, etc.) and cartographers. - filled by ZapperJet

Deputy Master of Age Creation - ZapperJet has a very good artistic vision and good skills with Blender. However, he is unused to specifically making Ages for Uru. He would like someone with knowledge about Blender's connection with the Uru code to help familiarize him with its workings.

Master of Plot - Manages plot and storyline. Organizes and leads writers department, puzzle design department, and storyline department. Approves of journals and puzzles.

Me - Final say in major decisions. Provides beginning concept. MoC and MoPr do not have to worry too much about me, as I have little skill or experience in their departments. I will make requests, but I will not micromanage (aside from the beginning concept). MoR might have me being somewhat nosy. MoA and MoPl wiill deal with me more. I have definite puzzles, games, plot elements, characters, and parts of Ages. I will not head the day-to-day work of the Team. That is the work of the MoC.

Original Non-Council - Volunteers. All must sign an NDA and describe their area of expertise. If their expertise is needed, they will be consulted by a member of the Council. Some may never be consulted.

Team - Formed once the Council has finished the plan. Will be chosen by the Council. Must sign NDA's. May join any or all of the following groups.

Technical Dept - Works on programming and the technical aspects of the game.

Messengers - Underlings of the MoR. May discuss some plot and Age material on forums when the MoR is absent.

Artistic Dept - Modelers, Texture Artists, Musicians, Sound Creators. Makes the visual and audio part of the Ages (as opposed to the plot and technical aspects).

Writers Dept - Writes journals and notes.

Puzzle (and game) Design Dept - Makes puzzles and games (mini games, like Ayoheek or Jalek Dador). Organize solutions, general appearance, and other factors. Works closely with the Technical and Artistic Departments.

Storyline Department - Organizes historical and present storylines. Works closely with Writers and Puzzle Designers.

Ahrotahntee - Outsiders. Specialists. May or may not have signed NDA. Those who do sign will be able to work on more tasks.

Ages

Major Ages - Larger and more complicated than minor Ages. Contain more puzzles and games. All these will be given names later on.

Age 1 - (I am Gehn, I can number Ages) Smaller than Age 2. A D'ni poet's burial site for his wife. I have the most ideas already developed for this Age.

Age 2 - A larger Age, but I have less of a picture of it yet. An illicit post-fall Age meant to be a Maintainer Garrison. The DRC (unless Cyan won't allow me to use them - it will be discussed with Cyan fully) opens it (it was illicit, but not dangerous at all) to give explorers practice and keep them fit.

Age 3 - Will be released later than 1 or 2. A garden Age. Little more is developed yet, and even that might change.

Minor Ages - Smaller. Often have important plot elements, clues, or just linking books. Again, these will be named more thouroughly.

minor Age 1 - Rubble and an office. Perhaps part of D'ni, perhaps another similar Age. Somewhat like Sharper's Office.

minor Age 2 - Granary Age. Nothing else developed.

Ahra Pahts Shells - A possibility.

Other - Tie-ins with other Ages is a possibility. If you think your Age will suit Peter's quest, contact the Master of Plot and the Master of the Council. If they believe that your Age particularly suits the story, they may discuss locating a link in point, journal, or puzzle clue in your Age.

General Plot (there is more developed, but it is currently top secret)

A college intern named David, alledgedly connected to the DRC, writes several journals. He speculates about another path, neither the DRC nor Yeesha. He also provides transcriptions of journals and writings with commentary from both Pre- and Post-Fall D'ni.

To apply

General Rules - The project will take a lot of effort and a lot of cooperation. Teamwork is necessary.

Council - Nominate yourself here by posting. You can nominate yourself for multiple fields. Also, give a short description of your abilities and screenshots/video/etc. of your work. You must gain three recommendations from your peers. You may recommend multiple people, but you may not nominate multiple people for the same seat or the same person for multiple seats (is that sentence confusing? Let's say that Bob nominates himself for MoC and MystFan300Atrus nominates himself for MoC and MoR. You can recommend Bob for MoC and MF300A for MoR. You cannot nominate both Bob and MF300A for MoC. You cannot recommend MF300A for both MoC and MoR). You must be willing to sign the NDA listed below if you are chosen. Please note also that the Council is a hard position and has more beaucratic work. You may want to take a lower position that allows you to use your particular talents better.

Master of the Council - You will have to provide the leadership for this project. You must have a lot of stamina and enthusiasm.

Master of Relations - You must be able to skillfully leak information without boring or spoiling fans. Leaking too little may diminish excitement.

Master of Art and Age Creation - You will probably not get as much work actually making the Age than others in the artistic department. You must be able to visualize and design the age.

Masterpieces - Council member nominees should present some kind of masterpiece that they created, helped create, etc. Ages should be presented as screenshots, video, or concept drawings/writings. Also, give a short (a paragraph at most) answer to the questions I put below.
Master of the Council - Present something that shows vision. Your question: How would you complete the storyline for the Second Major Age Concept?
Master of Relations - Show your skill at promoting something - unique methods allowed. Your question: How do you balance spoiling the community and having them lose interest?
Master of Programming - Show or explain your skill in technical matters. Your question: I have no clue how to pick your post, so just tell me something.
Master of Art and Age Creation - Show your skill in Age mapping, concept art, or beginning modeling. Your question: What does the poet's wife's burial location (mentioned in the First Major Age Concept) look like? It is indoors and has stained glass.
Master of Plot - Show your skill in telling stories and managing canon. Your question is the same as the MoC's.

Original Non-Council - Sign the general NDA below and send it to me along with a list of your specialties and any particular examples.

Team - You will be picked by the Council. I presume there will be discussion on this later.

Ahrotahntee - We will find you.

Actually we need one council member more. We just have a structure change and somehow nobody's bothered to fix the page about the councilors. If you want to read the full latest structure here's a link: viewtopic.php?f=47&t=838&p=7572

It's pretty fun to read (not awfully huge and boring). :D

Gah, every single one of my terms seems to add some level of confusion. I'm beginning to see why Gehn just numbered everything.
