2 new Ages for consideration

Postby Jadawin12 » Wed Aug 19, 2009 9:30 am

I have a few ideas for some Ages and I would really love some feedback.

The first Age I was thinking of is a bit complex

The basic setup would be something like the original design for Myst Island found here: http://mystonline.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=17734

But there are a few differences:

1. It is not an Island but a penninsula.

2. It is an illicit flawed Age the Writer wanting continual summer and aurora borealis every night created a link to an Age in which the Sun is stripping away the mosture of the planet and Sunspots at times make it uninhabitable. The Age is dry and dusty and the Oceans are much lower. The library and planetarium show signs of wear from sandstorms.

3. There are additional structures created as recently as 2007 by a Anti-DRC splinter cell. There are Quonset Huts, ATVs fueling stations generators, armories and computers. Some of the Quonset huts have Anti-DRC propaganda posters on the walls. However all the soldiers are mysteriously missing, there is some evidence of fighting. (oh and P.S. I don't support the Ideals of the Anti-DRC I just love losers)

4. The Puzzle Isle (now the Puzzle plateau) has access to a D'ni esqu vault which holds more secrets to the origin of this Illicit Age.

The Second Age would be a Huge Art Deco Skyscraper, very Empire State Building/ Chrystler Building-esque. The rest of the Age has fallen into a deep Ice Age. The Great Inventor (working name) a Doc Samson kind of figure saved most of the people on their world by brining them into this structure. This Age could be somewhat of a community Age with apartments able to be "rented" by the players. The center of the Skyscraper would be hollow containing walkways and parks for the players to talk, the Apartments themselves would be large and beautiful if a bit similar. At the top of the Tower would be the Inventor's Penthouse Which would contain complex puzzle, amazing machinery, facinating beauty, and some intrigue.

So let me know what you think. All feedback would be appreciated

The first suggestion I would make is to steer very, very clear of anything which could possibly be interpreted as having been copied from any of the Cyan ages. This is not only to streamline the age approval process from Cyan, but because it's just plain wrong. There's nothing wrong with 'inspired by', but my advice would be to scrap the library and planitarium and just do your own thing. It's more fun anyway. Plus, from an IC point of view, the Myst island layout was only created by Atrus long after the fall of D'ni, so it's by no means standard. For a better explanation, check out the Guild of Archivers website at http://www.dpwr.net/.

Also an IC quibble, as far as I know, there was never any organised violence in the cavern, even at the height of "the troubles"; on the other hand that would give you free storytelling rein if you wanted to create a super-fringe-wacko-extremist group who felt so strongly about the cavern that they were willing to fight for it, or alternatively a vigilante group to 'defend' the cavern from the 'bahro menace' or some such. A military-themed age is certainly original, but you have to remember that a lot of people here love and are a part of the Uru community because of its dissociation with all things death-related. You'd have a hard time putting it through, but it could be done so long as you were tactful about it and didn't force it down anyone's throat (such as no bloodstains on the walls, no spent cartriges lying around, etc.) Posters are an excellent idea, though, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what puzzles you come up with.

I've always loved Art Deco, and it would be great to see it in-game. The confines of a skyscraper are not exactly camera-friendly, so you'd have to take that into account with the design. As for the 'rented' spaces, you've probably already seen Ahra Pahts,so you may know that's already been done. See if you can think of something you could do differently from AP, something unique you could offer or a different angle on the community age concept. The key is to create a companion to AP and not a competitor, because our community is just too small for two huge community ages. Have a chat over at the AP subforum and see if they can help you better.

Above all, please don't be discouraged by my overwhelmingly negative post. I for one eagerly await whatever you may end up producing.

Reply to Paragraph 1
Good point I have chatted a bit with others and this seems to be echoed. I will work to make something more unique for the setup.

Reply to Paragraph 2

Well the violence was to be part of the mystery it was not so much that they had actually had a chance to fight the DRC or the Bahro but that something else entirely had made them vanish. Kind of like when you first traveled to the Mechanical Age you know something bad happened there... but what? But I do understand your point I will try and keep it subtle. I hope the posters will be fun I was thinking a kind of Soviet kind of feel for them. I do hope the puzzles live up to expectations.

Reply to paragraph 3

Thank you I love Art Deco as well. and I can understand why you would think it very cramped mainly because I forgot to mention this, the interior of the skyscaper would be largely hollow. with large flat bridges across the middle kind of like this: http://www.matrix-explained.com/photopo ... on-med.jpg. (except bright pretty and artdeco..y) Secondly I certaily do not want to compete with Ahra Pahts because their community age is much more elegant and unique than my own will be. However I will take your suggestion on working with them I'm sure that together we could make something really fun and make it more of a companionship than a competition.

Thank you for you careful consideration of my post. I am not discouraged just more dedicated with the fine feedback I have recieved.
