Soundtrack piece

Postby biohaz » Fri Mar 05, 2010 12:59 pm

Here is a piece I have been working on sporadically for a while. It is nowhere near complete. I had more full version of it (more brass), but I lost that due to a poor job of backing up files during a OS reinstallation. I fortunately happen to have a hardcopy of the newer score, so I should be able to re-input the lost work.
I was wondering if I could get some feedback on the music.
I fear that this may be too melodic for use as background music, but It might possibly be a good theme.
Also, if anyone knows of a better (and free) soundfont than the one I am using, please let me know.
Made using MuseScore (with a soundfont stolen from Finale).

This is quite a nice piece. It grows on you; to be perfectly honest, I didn't really like it the first time around, but now that I listen to it again I can see a lot to like in it. I wish I could put my finger on just what it is exactly about the first part that I don't like. It seems a bit monotonous and repetitive, and at the very beginning, the string notes end a bit too abruptly for my taste. In fact, the string part in general lets the piece down a bit. On the other hand, I absolutely love the use of the oboe on the melody, particularly the contrapuntal bit at the very end.

For a soundfont, you could try this: http://www.soundsonline.com/free-orchestra. I couln't get it to work, but then I have a cheap sound card. Also, you could try this website: http://freesf2.com/.

Keep working on it - there's defininely potential in this piece, and I'm looking forward to hearing it finished. Glad to have you here!

I kind of know what you mean. I originally had the part at the beginning written for vocals, but then changed it to strings in hopes of being able to have the symphony at my school perform it. I think I liked the vocals better though. Especially synth vocals. Maybe I'll try changing it back to the vocals.

I see. I'll see if I can add some reverb or something like that... fade the notes out a little.

I'll check out those other soundfonts.
