What are SoftVolumes?

This probably should be a wiki entry, but I'm just curious what softvolumes are? What do they do?

They do many things:

You can use softvolumes so that when you enter a building/cave/etc, the sun stops lighting up your avatar.

You can use softvolumes to make sure that sounds stay only in a certain region.

And you're suppose to be able to use softvolumes for visregions (something that you don't want rendered until the Avatar is in that area, helps game performance), but I have not gotten this one to work.

Any you're right...it should be on the wiki. I guess someone will get around to doing a tutorial. In the mean time do a search on the forum
