New Writer Here!

Postby Harrison Pink » Wed Jul 09, 2008 11:48 am

Hi everyone, I have been a member of the GoW since Kirel was released, but now that MORE has been announced, I feel it time to throw my hat in the ring as an active Writer. However, I am more of a Maya master (in my own mind :D ). I don't want to have to re-learn Blender to create ages. Is there a way to model/UV/texture in maya and export to Blender to use the plugins?

Much obliged!

Welcome!

I'm not sure if there's a perfect way to get Maya stuff into Blender (take a peek at the import options for blender and see if any match the export stuff for Maya).

I'm betting that there isn't going to be a perfect Maya to Blender solution (and you'll need to set regions, etc up in Blender anyway) I'd recommend learning a bit of Blender (if you haven't already) and use Obj format and tweak the age in Blender.

I'm sure you/GoW will figure something out for a solution. :)
Currently getting some ink on my hands over at the Guild Of Ink-Makers (PyPRP2).

export as an .obj file ... then import that .obj file into Blender.
(You´ll have to manually import the texture ... though your model WILL be uv mapped correctly after export/import)
when it comes to Age creation ... "DOH" seems to be my middle name...

cheers bob, the UV was what I was more concerned with!

I'm going to have to say this now... You really are going to have to learn blender in order to use the current export tools. Regardless of what program you build and map your models in, you will have to set up your regions, scripting, material settings, etc in blender. That's just the way it is now, and it doesn't really serve much purpose to pretend otherwise. Besides, having had previous experience, I don't imagine blender will be too difficult for you, and you may come to like it's interface. (I did)

I have to agree with Nadnerb ... I used to use Milkshape ... when I first opened Blender I thought ... ..."No WAY can I use this" ... but then I realised that I HAD to use Blender (like Nadnerb says) to put in regions and sounds and ... (most importantly) ... materials (and therefore textures) .

Once I realised that I could now have several materials, with several layers of textures, and stencils, blending etc, etc, etc, I soon started to actually MAKE new objects in Blender (the transition is not EASY ... but then it's not that hard either ! ). A few weeks ago I went back into Milkshape to get an "old" model of mine ... and suddenly realised how BAD it was (- compared to Blender) ... so yes, Like Nadnerb, I'm now a "born-again" Blenderite ... ;) .
(I think you might be surprised how quickly you could master Blender's interface ... )
when it comes to Age creation ... "DOH" seems to be my middle name...

Welcome to the Party! Beer's in the fridge :D

But yeah, I understand what you mean by not wanting to re-learn Blender. Would be so much easier to have a program like GTKRadiant that i know backwards and forwards and just import to Blender.

Sadly, can't be done with GTK. So I'm stuck :S
