Quick polycount question

Postby Shoggoth » Sat Feb 06, 2010 7:55 pm

I've been using Andy's book model from the GoM Blender mesh repository, but I noticed that it is relatively high-poly. I'm going to have a large bookshelf in Ahlnay with a lot of books on it, and I'm a little hesitant about using a whole bunch of a model with so many faces. I was wondering if anybody could tell me approximately how many faces appear to be on Cyan's book models (for example, in Sharper's office). Specifically, how many faces are in the spine of the book? Andy's model uses a 7-segment arc for the spine, which seems like a lot to me.

EDIT: Just adding that Uru isn't working on my computer at the moment; otherwise I would check myself.

While I don't know the answer to your precise question, I will point out two possibilities:
Do you need book models if your books are going to be in a bookcase? If only the spines are showing, you can simulate the books using a texture on a single plane.
If you do need to model each separate book, you could use only one face for the spine and simulate a rounded spine using shadows and highlights.

I thought of that, but the books are meant to be in disarray in at least one of the bookshelves, and I didn't want to make a jarring difference between the filled shelves and the others. Also, the books in Uru seem to be modeled individually, or at least using more than one face for the spine. If you take a look at Sharper's office bookshelf, for example, you can see the kind of thing I'm aiming for.
