Library Texture

If you feel like you're up to the challenge of building your own Ages in Blender or 3ds Max, this is the place for you!

Well,

If your books are all suppose to be the same height, and are tightly in the shelf, you could make a big, rectangle box, and then just worry about the face pointing outwards.

Or, if the books are different heights and stuff, you could still make a big rectangle box, and then scultp it using the cutting tool.

Or.....if no one is suppose to get too close to it, you could make a plane and texture it with a pic of books. But that only works if the Avies can't get too close to it.

But if you want detail, realizm, and people will get close to it.....sorry, but it would look better if you made each book! :D

Hey! It's good practice! Repetative things always make you better at them! Try making some railings or a long, winding stair case!
(all though I saw on another thread that they have something to help with that!)

Ah, thx... well, so far I've been texturing the individual spines, but not the covers... and keeping them close to each other... but just to be realistic, I'll make covers for some of them too, so I can make gaps in between them.

Here's a few clothbacks for you. The old ones are interesting.
Those are just 2 small jpeg versions, I have these in hi-res (3072 x 2304).
I also have them with flash for color reference.
I can take custom pics if you need any, just tell me what you want.
Also it is easy to erase or change some titles, and to add some damage to newer books.

Suggestions:
- used books store;
- local library, reference section;
- big city libraries sometimes have a rare books section you can ask access to;
- universities should have that too.

Ok, I just finished the bookshelf... now, is there a way to change the color of the white part of the books that shows that there's no textures? if so, it would be much better if I could make it brown, instead of white :P And... how do I make the books the same object as the bookshelf? so I can import it into my age?

How to make 2 objects 1: Select all the objects you wish to join together, by holding down the Shift-key while right-clicking on the object.

Then, while in Object mode. Click on the Object menu, and you should see Join Objects.

That's all there is to it.

Not sure what you're talking about on the White thing though.

well, you know how in Texture mode, when there's no texture on an object, it's white? well, is there any way to change that color, without adding a texture? O, and does anyone have a seamless wooden plank texture?

Short answer on the color question: Not really.

Easy solution. Create the color you want in Photoshop, make it 256 x 256 pic or smaller, and use it (texture, UV, etc).

as far as a seamless wood planking. You could use this pic below. Just cut out the wood part. This is the skin I used for the school room in Camp Bravo.

ah, thx :D O... and I just added bookshelves to the library in my age... and man, it goes sooo slow now! I was planning on making this a big age... but If I can't even finish the 2nd room, it may not be possible :P how did the people at ahra pahts do it? i mean, that age is HUGE! how were they able to make it, without blender going so slow? I hope all those books aren't causing the problem, cuz I'm sposed to have a bunch of shelves in the library.

What you could do is (not blur out the names cause that ends up looking really bad) use a clone tool and clone the book texture over the names.

Also you can always duplicate books, change the colours and resize them (or add elements to them) to get new books.
