I've got mine set to 10,000 (that's ten thousand) for Zephyr Cove, and I don't have any greying out in mine.

Well 10,000 is has high as you can set it, anything higher, and Blender snaps it back to 10,000. How close is this rock?

By making the grid size larger, you can also increas the clip-distance dramatically.
(both settings are in the view properties window)

*pounds fist on table, eyes covered, laughing so hard I think my gut is going to bust!*

I meant in Blender units.......best guess.........how big is the rock? Again in blender units...I guess I need to download your file and look.

Sorry but the reason your reply cracked me up so bad is, it's like a blind person asking how big something is, and you hold your hands out so far apart and say "about that big".

Maybe the blind person shouldn't be asking that question. LOL :D

Okay, I got your file called up and I'm looking at it.

First off, you have the clipping still set at 500, so if you get only 500 blend units (500 feet away) things will grey out.

We told you, go into the 3D window (the one with the rock and camera), click on View, and then View properties.
A little box will pop up. Change "Clip End" to 10000.

Okay, another strange thing. You have your camera in layer 1, but all your objects in layer 2. :?

Uhm......shouldn't your objects be in layer 1?

Okay, I just moved them all to layer 1, but I'm still not seeing anything through your camera either. Let me look some more. Gotta take the dog out right now.

Looks to me like your camera is just too close to the rock.
