If you feel like you're up to the challenge of building your own Ages in Blender or 3ds Max, this is the place for you!

yes.... simply add another layer to your image ...move it so it becomes the BOTTOM layer ... then adjust the opacity of the layer with the image ...you should start to see the checkered background show through ... try setting it at something like 80% to start with.

Major Tip: Each time you export the age (when trying a new degree of transparancy) ... make sure you delete the image from the tex_chache for your age (in the Dat folder) ...
when it comes to Age creation ... "DOH" seems to be my middle name...

Yes, GIMP is exactly the tool you want. :)

I have to mention, though, that if (IF) the detail texture is meant to take over completely when you come up close (not very likely, I admit), I can't truly see why you would need an alpha in the full size texture.

For your plastered wall, I'd suggest trying (instead of doing the filtering thing) making your detail texture seamless, so that you can tile it without too obvious tesselation. This will result in a very bland looking wall, but then comes step two; multiply (mix will work as well, but may produce a result with considerably less contrast) with your larger non-tiled texture. Play around with contrast and luma levels (using e.g. GIMP), for best results.
