Ages; Textures and Skies

If you feel like you're up to the challenge of building your own Ages in Blender or 3ds Max, this is the place for you!

Well, you could put the sphere in a different layer, ([m] > number) or just make the sphere large enough that when working on your age, your viewpoint is inside it.
The advantage of using layers is that you can group all the related elements in the same layer and make them disappear at the same time. The plugin doesn't really care about blender layers, it just happens to put certain objects in certain layer.

OK thanks. I saw some tutorials saying "put this is layer 3" and I thought layer numbers were significant.
So I suppose it's just like Photoshop layers.

Thanks also, Bob. This is also like Photoshop.

Ok, I did UV textures then... any Idea what my problem was?

I think you still have the normals (face directions) point outwards.
One day I ran through the cleft for the fiftieth time, and found that uru held no peace for me anymore.

Hmm... well that doesn't explain the Textures not showing up in the Age...

Starting small and making a simple room, I ran into Justin's problem. After fighting with Blender (I'm not at ease with the navigation, etc, being a veteran FPS map maker :D ), I finally got a simple room built. Then I was off to texturing.

Great tutorial on Alcug, except after spending a LONG time creating a walnut/cherry blend for wooden walls, I exported my little Age only to find.......no textures, just the base color of the wood.

I tore my hair out for hours on this. I poured over the tutorial, I must have missed something!!

UV Mapping, okay, let's give it a try, but of course I had to go find an image of a wood texture.

Bingo! Linked in and my wooden floor, looked like a planked wooden floor now!

Okay, this got my hackles in a bunch, while learning how to create materials and textures in Blender is an A+, not being able to use them in your Age is stupid. And I do mean STOOOOOOPID.

Now I have to use something that someone else's created (which may or may not fit what I need), or I have to spend time trying to make the image myself.

On top of that, no where in the Alcugs tutorial does it say: "Oh, by the way, now that you know how to make materials and textures, we must warn you that to see your textures in Uru, you'll have to use UV mapping instead."

At least that would have been a heads up.

Oh by the way, you might want to add this little tid bit somewhere on the forum, where newbies like us can find it. Because during my hair pulling, I came here, and of course saw nothing, until Justin's post (thanks Justin!!).

Well there is a tutorial clearly titled "Texturing" but quickly browsing it and the ret of the wiki it appears you are right, I can't see anywhere mentionned the fact that you actually need to UV map your textures so they show up. This is obvious for people who have been doing Ages for a while, but this may not be for newcomers.
It is a crucial piece of info and it is not available on the wiki. This is a perfect example of why we need someone to actively take care of the wiki.. That's beyond the point of this thread though. (this is already being discussed here; and to a lesser extent on the Alcugs board)

Isn't the whole point of a wiki that several people can correct mistakes and add missing content?

Not everyone is good at making tutorials.

Otherwise I'd have a whole series of "Age Building for dummies" tutorials

Also not everyone has the time/knowledge/energy need to update a wiki. That's why I think we should have one or more dedicated people.
