Uhm........you really shouldn't be getting something like that Justin....

Would you mind sharing your blend file and letting me look at it? I don't need the textures, I just want to look at your meshes.

Ok, well, here's the actuall age file (the one that freezes) http://www.mediafire.com/?6amkwtf2xlx and I'm not sure if the textures are in there, but I don't think so. And here is the source file of the bookshelf: http://www.mediafire.com/?9zdyyu5o1i2 I would be very greatful if you could figure it out :P

I'll take a look.

At at 56 MB......jeez, I would hope the textures are there. The prp file for my Night Time Camp Bravo is just over 10mb for the whole Age.

Ok, I'm not sure why you don't see what is causing this... Your shelf is subdivided beyond all reason. A single, flat, face on the side of your shelf has 531 vertexes! Why? The face is flat! It should be one face! The more verts and faces you have, the more time plasma has to spend thinking about them while rendering. Less verts/faces = better performance.

You need to rebuild that shelf using less faces.

Reduced, unpacked, File.

oh jeez, the nightmare! the nightmare!!

Justin's Age just about locked up my computer!

Okay, obviously Nadnerb got to you before I did.

Justin, you want to make it LOOK real.......not try to MAKE it real!

As Nadnerb said, you've got WAY WAY too many faces on those shelves. Even if you could some how export that Age, just as it is right now, most people linking in would get a lag from hell.
Way too complex

Now, on a side note: Hey, if this was just a Scene you were modeling, for just a pic or animation, kudos! The complexity of your models would be great!

But not for Age creation. Look around in MOUL, you won't ever see anything quite that complex as your book shelves.

You had like 59 of those suckers in there too. Whew. And at only 512 MB of memory, my computer was whinning big time about it! hehehe.

Make a simple bookshelf. Make the sides a 4 sided cube. The top and bottom, and each shelf just a 4 sided cube. Edit them to size.
Don't bevel the edges like that. It multiplies the faces quite a bit. I mean, yes it looks great, but when walking around in MOUL, most people are not going to look for that. They'll be looking at the texture of your shelves.
Now the books. I know what you did there.

You made a bunch of books individually, and then you Joined them into one object. Then you took those books and duplicated them, and then joined them to the Book shelve, making one massively complex object.
Not good.

Use another cube and edit the size. Then texture it, but worry only about the face that people can see. You can throw in an odd book here or there.

But then please, DON'T join them together or to the shelves. As you'll start making a monster again.

Don't get discuraged! You obviously think big! That's for sure!

But remember, we are trying to give the ILLUSION that it's real. Not make it real. This ain't the Matrix! :D

January 29th, 2008: The first denial-of-service attack using a Blender file is reported. There is no known protection so far against the "Justintime" trojan.

Actually, my point was that the extra faces were pointless. A perfectly flat face will look the same, whether it has one face, or 531. There was no beveling issue, the file I posted is pretty much identical to the old one, front bevel and all, but with somewhere around 20 verts in the shelf portion. (compared to several thousand) I didn't touch the books, since they were fine.

Right, I just made 58 duplicates of the book case and books, and didn't slow my computer down at all. Saved it to a blend file and the size of the blend file jumps fro 512kb to 22 Mb. But still, a lot smaller than his 274 MB file.

Justin, I would recommend taking this file that Nadnerb has moded for you, and append it into your Age, use it, instead of the ones you made. You'll find you don't freeze up anymore.

You also had some building structure that looked like it had a LOT of faces on it too, but I couldn't look in detail. Just selecting one of your bookshelves, made my hard drive spin for 3 minutes before giving me control back.

O_o Wow, I didn't know subdividing could cause so much trouble... and also, I had to make the bookshelf one object, i needed to import it into my age, from the sourse file... I subdivided them, because I noticed that vertex paint works better the more faces there are... or at least it seems that way... how would you go about fixing the subdivided faces?
