Community Nexus

If you feel like you're up to the challenge of building your own Ages in Blender or 3ds Max, this is the place for you!

If Cyan did express interest in crossing over from MOULa to a DIRTSAND server directly (not a shard), is that something you all would be interested in? Or do you prefer standalone shards?

I think both could co-exist - independent shards and dependent servers - but the question is, do you all have a preference?
Can we rebuild it? Yes, we can - here's how.

The idea of being able to cross seamlessly from Shard to Shard would really be awesome. It would also be very cool if you could chat with someone on a different Shard. Even if Cyan decides they don't want to host Fan Ages on their server, by allowing Explorers to communicate/link to independent servers - IMO, the overall experience would increase greatly.

Just my 2 cents..

"Labyrinth" != Explorable - they are not the same.

This looks like a job for the thesaurus. /me flips open a book. How about...."Traversable"!

Though except for Nathan most seem to agree with what we came up with - it's not like we don't care what everybody says, but a poll is IMHO a bad way to find a consensus. It leaves too little space for your own preferences, and too many people will just click and go away, thereby contributing nothing to the discussion.

These sorts of things are the decisions of those implementing the project, not a public vote.

Note that this project predates your posts - you are not the project lead, so please stop acting like it.

This is not your idea alone, this is a very old idea indeed.

Yes, that makes since. Sorry.
Robert The Rebuilder wrote:Regarding the one nexi versus two debate...

Suppose that the DIRTSAND server code becomes fully operational, and that several fans with appropriate hardware began hosting fan ages on their DIRTSAND servers. The question remains: how will people playing MOULa link to one of the fan ages?

If Cyan had to maintain a single nexus with an ever increasing list of links to fan ages, they would become the bottleneck for getting a new age available for testing/exploring.

On the other hand, if Cyan merely added a link to this community nexus age (hosted on one of our DIRTSAND servers), they never need to do anything else. We control the addition of links to new ages - not them.

[The discussion on which age would Cyan add that link to is probably worthy of a separate topic.]

A very good idea. Here's my two cents:
Players will have a new book called "Restoration Nexus" placed in their Nexus (it will be available from the beginning). That book will lead to what we currently call the WNexus. At the WNexus, players will be able to link to all fan-created content. There will also be a book leading to the Nexus behind the link in point.

Now, of course, take into account that the original Nexus will most likely be upgraded by then, and Cyan may have released new content (note what they said):
Cyan wrote:No promises, but we’re trying to figure out a way to show our appreciation to supporters by giving you a little something extra in MO:ULagain.

Also, I believe there should be a single, official, shard.

Well, personally, I prefer independent shards to dependent servers...

But, may I note, to do this would require a great deal of effort on cyan's part, as they'd have to alter the servers (and possibly client(?)) to support this sort of thing. And since they are yet to even patch the minkata sparkie...

And the minkata sparkie is a /lot/ less effort and time and etc than making that sort of thing possible would be.

So, yeah, I personally don't like the idea of making us dependent on their servers, and I don't think its feasible either.

Also, as far as I know, Zrax has no intention to make DIRTSAND servers anything less than a full shard. =)

Thanks for the clarification, Kaelise. Sorry for the diversion. Now back to the regularly scheduled programme...

Actually you updated it to reflect your own thoughts - nobody else ever agreed to putting *all* fan-content to this Nexus, quite the opposite. The first option you shortened so much that it got incorrect (it has to be "all non-D'ni Fan Ages"). So I reverted that part of your changes.

The Shard discussion is really a completely independent topic.
I prefer e-mails to "diafero arcor de" (after adding the at and the dot) over PMs.

No one seems to be really advertising the idea of a new GUI in Cyan's Nexus, and we really need to make a firm decision on this whole design thing so we can start on the next step (designing the Age).

Personally I don't think we need a second nexus, the GUI on Cyan's just needs updating/fixing.

The only way I could see the need for 2 nexuses is for uru ages/areas and plasmuru maps. Seperation of IC and OOC.

But then I'm very "snobbish" about what Ages I install to my offline build to keep.

That's true, but then we wouldn't get imagers, an Age Update blackboard, who knows. But, thinking outside the box, we could add those features to the GUI itself. If you think about it, maybe we shouldn't make two Nexuses ("Nexuses" is the correct plural of "Nexus" according to my dictionary) after all.
