ACK! What have I forgotten to do?

I've been following the "Your first Age" tutorial, and I've managed to get as far as the rock texture, but it's only now I can see that my Age is not the smoothly rounded subsurfed shape I can see in Blender, but the blocky collection of vertices I started with. I've obviously left out something elementary, but I don't know what.

Also I'm all black, but I think that gets solved later.

help?

I'm pretty sure that subsurf (where blender renders a smooth surface instead of a bunch of angular faces) doesn't carry over into Uru.

It doesn't by default.

Though if you use subsurf as a "multires" modifier (edit panel), you can apply it to the mesh. After that it's part of the mesh and it will export.

While in edit mode, try:

Mesh>Faces>Set Smooth.

I do this, and as long as Blender has plenty of faces to work with, it comes out nice and smooth, yes, even in Uru.

As far as everything being all black......well you haven't added any lights yet at that point.

Okay, that's helped a bit. I think I went wrong somewhere in the pulling and stretching phase and reset the faces somehow. Thank you.

Apply your subsurf. It removes the original guide mesh (my advice: make a copy with SHIFT-DKEY, turn it into a region (add text property string type region) and move it to another layer (MKEY), so it won't bother you), but you will be able to edit the subsurfed one fully and it will show up subsurfed in URU.

Zander, use subsurf wisely. If you have too many vertices in your meshes there will be a performance impact.
Terrain doesn't need to have too much detail; much can be done with textures and the illusion is perfect.

One of my favourites:
- Use sufsurf to make the terrain smooth
- Use a Decimator modifier to cut down drastically on the number of faces

It's what I used on the Tutorial Mesh.

I think I might have to start from scratch anyway. I've duplicated the bit I want to put the grass on, but I can't seem to select it outside edit mode without the original terrain being selected as well. And pressing P locks Blender up solid.

My penmanship leaves something to be desired...

Use the P key in edit mode only, object mode will make it do funny things. If I recall correctly, you just hit the ESC key when you accidentally hit P in object mode. It might take awhile, but things will go back to normal.
