Shiny/reflecting metal

Postby Zirrus » Wed Feb 20, 2008 5:02 am

shorah!
i wanted to make a shiny metal texture for my age.
(like in the boxage: the gaslamps and the pipes of the organ)
i messed around with the sliders etc in blender but i did not
get any good results. :x
how do i make a enviromental map and so on?
could someone please explain how to make good metal/glass materials?
that would be very nice. :)
maybe as a tutorial?

(ps: did not find anything using the forum-search)

Making Enviormental Maps is rather a involved process, but you can find a tutorial on it here.

Once you've learned how to do that part, there is another tutorial that covers it for Age writing here.

Please keep in mind that the GoW Wiki is still under construction and was just started up a few weeks ago, mostly to cover the new things that the new plugin can do. It takes time to make a instructive and helpful tutorial.

As far as making your objects "Shinny" keep in mind that textures you make in Blender will not be used by the Plasma engine, other than Images and Blending. It's a shame, I know, as Blender has some very powerful textures that you can make.

However, you can still give you object the apperance of being "shinny" in that, shinny means it is a highly polished surface that reflects light.
Making the enviormental map for it will definately give the illusion that the object is highly polished to the point of reflecting what in around it.
However, it will also depend on what images you used for you UV mapping of the texture, and how you have certain things set in the Materials section:

The sliders in the pic for Spec and Amb will definately help affect this (plus whatever lighting you've used).

Give the tutorials above a try and see what happens.

thx!
ive got stuck in the Environment Maps tutorial. :(
1. i dont really want to place a specific camera, because it is supposed to be reflecting from each side.
(where should i place the camera if i have to do that?)
2. i want to make a different scene. in the tutorial you need 2 reflecting things. i have got
one island and want to make a sphere(for testing) that floats over it and reflects the ground(which is
rocky and not reflecting at all)
3. im using blender 2.45. the buttons on the shader tab are different(also differnt from what you have
got on the little pic) where do i get the radion button?
...
as you may notice i dont know blender very well. :D
once i completely managed to understand how to make those maps i will try to write a tutorial.

i figured out how to render cubemaps using a far
more easy and (in my opinion) better (or more general)
tutorial.

Zirrus,

If you've located a tutorial that is, in your opinion, easier for people to use, it's always polite to include a link to it in your post, so that others might be able to use it too. :D

So how does it look in Plasma?
I added a link in the wiki, feel free to replace with a real tutorial anytime.
