Sounds - Naming files

I just had a thought... now that we are all adding new sounds to our ages ... and distributing them via the ULM ... do we need to ensure that we don't use the same file names (like "wind.oog" for example) as that would overwrite other Ages files with the same name ... so ... should we name our sound files "[youragename]filename.ogg" to stop this from happening in the future?

...and shouldn't this be mentioned somewhere in the WIKI ... ?

For the Ahra Pahts shell check list, we have this convention:

Code: Select all
All sound files are distributed in .ogg format and named beginning with "pahts", the 3 digit shell number, an underscore, and a name, e.g.: pahts111_ambient.ogg

But for general ages, I think your suggestion is fine. The most likely place to add this would seem to be the Adding Sounds tutorial.

That is a good idea, no telling what would happen, might even have the other person's Age playing sounds in your Age. :D

I got lazy and just labled that one wind.ogg. Look for a change in the next version of Zephyr Cove.

No Wait! Not lazy.....uhm......pressed for time...yah, that's it! I was pressed for time!

Dont worry Andy ... I've been doing it too  (and I'm not "pressed for time" ;)) ... it only just ocurred to me exactly WHAT I was doing ... that's why I thought I'd post ... to warn others ... (I'll change mine too in my next release of Sonavio ...)

Prefix the file name with the Age.
It would be great if writers would be willing to share some of their sounds. In that case they could prefix the file name with GoW_.
That would be an informal library of GoW sounds, and it would save some space. Any sound with that prefix would be available for use by any writer.

I wouldn't have a problem with that on the SFX files I make up.

However, the music files are another matter, as they were composed and recorded by Dan Sadowski (aka Dan'ni) who's on the web staff over at Uru Obsessions Forum. I asked his permission to use those songs for each age first.

I don't think it would be a problem as long as he's given due credit for it. Then again, think about it. Music you put in an Age helps define that Age. When you listen to the music from Uru, say like the Er'cana Harvester Music, you think of Er'cana, not Gira or Kemo, or Relto.

So to me it would be better to just share things like SFX files.

All the Uru sound files are prefixed with the Age name, so it's a good precedent to follow.

As for sharing general sound effects, if I can come up with any good ones, I'll be happy to. There's one I linked to in the Musicians topic, which if anyone has managed to do an Age with birds, Aeolian pipes and running water they're very welcome to. :)
