Why can't I see myself?

Please could someone elighten me ;)

My avatar appears black whilst the world around him is well lit - is there a way to easily rectify this? I'm currently using a Sun only to light the scene and I know my clothes etc were visible under a spotlight indoors so is this something to do with light and shadows?? I've read about softvolumes but have no idea if this is relevant here.

To get lights to affect your avatar, you'll need to make sure that you have Ray Shadows turned on for that light

What would help is if you could show us your settings for your sun. Select your sun, bring up the Shading panels (F5), bring up the Lamp buttons (click on the lightbulb icon), take a screenshot and post it here.

[Edit] Andy: I've had lights affect my avatar without Ray Shadows enabled; that just enables shadows, IIRC.

Ah! Sorry, just reread the post....thought they meant shadows.

Oops sorry - my mistake - turns out I had set the lighting to a lamp rather than a sun! Would have to be some powerful bulb!!
All works fine now and man fully visible (with shadow effect).

Thanks for the replies!
