Lamp troubles

I've been working on an age, in which I have a small library... now, at the very front of it, the wall will be all stained glass, casting colored light on the front shelves. At the very back wall, parallel to the Stained glass wall, will be a cozy corner, with a comfy chair, rug, and a tall lamp illuminating the area. My question is, how would I make the lamp illuminate the chair, and surrounding area, making it look realistic? If I just have a regular lamp lamp inside the lamp shade, it doesn't effect the outside of the lamp shade, making it look black on the outside, and not effecting anything but the inside of the shade, base and pole of the lamp. I tried illuminating the outside of the lampshade, but putting a Spot lamp above the lamp, to illuminate the shade, and that looked good, but didn't light the chair. When I duplicated the Spot lamp, and rotated it to face the chair (the source still at the lamp), it illuminated some parts of the chair, but left the front way too dark! Does anyone know how I could do this with the best possible results?
