Making a good detail texture in Photoshop

Postby Jamey » Tue Jun 16, 2009 5:02 am

Hi all,

I've been trying to do this tutorial right here: http://www.guildofwriters.com/wiki/Detail_Texturing

However, when it comes to knowing how to make a detailed texture in Photoshop to use for mipmaps, I am absolutely clueless.

How do you make a texture like this in Photoshop? Does it need an alpha layer?

Thanks!

Jamey, are you asking how you could completely paint such a texture in Photoshop, or are you referring to this sentence (quote from the wiki)
I took the base image, loaded it up into the Gimp, and did an "Edge Detect" on it to get an image that is white where the texture changes most, and black where it changes the least.
and want to know where to find such an "Edge Detect" function in PS?

Umm, what did I start with rising my questions? :?
I was asking because I'm generally interested in creating textures / mipmaps and got the impression in depth you are asking something different; seems not.
To be honest, I do not even use/own photoshop (I use paintshop pro 7, an old handy software which became a tool directly grown together with my hands and brain, so I do not even have to think where to find functions, it just happens when I wish, like driving a bicycle).

Hope someone else can explain what you like to know.

I'm just hoping Trylon may see this thread, if not, I'll give him a PM, is he on often?
