Wouldn't it be cool if Cyan would release some kind of video on the creation of it textures and artwork in the Myst series. I for one would buy something like that. In all the games that I've played, I have never come across texturing that so immerses the player in the game. It's not the most realistic, so what is it? What makes it so memorable and powerful?

For me, texturing is the most difficult part of Age Creation. I find it extremely difficult to create an authentic looking texture as everything I want has to look distressed with time. The quality of the artwork defines the Age more than any layout, puzzles or anything else. The best Age is not the most complex, its the one with all the detail which creates authentisity and atmosphere and gives the right first impressions.

It would be really cool if Cyan were to create a Age-builders Masterclass video (or book) which detailed D'ni design and architecture as well as artwork tips.

http://inkwell.grey-skies.net/ might interest you, have a fair few links to Texture resources that Age builders might find interesting.

I'm not texturing pro, but I know a bit about Photoshop. When i want to make a texture look distressed I make it as if it was brand new and then add a distressing layer (scratches, dings, cracks, cobwebs). That is an over simplification, but the basics are there.

Oh, and I did look at that inkwell site. Very good site. I highly recommend a peek for anyone looking for textures.
