City Journey Cloth Puzzle

Postby J'Kla » Thu Oct 13, 2011 2:57 pm

Back during the days of UU D'Lanor and me had a project that used the Journey cloths in the city I was wondering are they still there in Complete Cronicles, UAM Shard and Deep Island becuse I was just wondering if they were could we look at reviving that project.

I know the code part was D'Lanors and I can't just revive that on a whim and it may not even exist as an option. It may not be viable for UAM or DI at all but as you need to have an assistant for one of the puzzles it would need restructuring for stand alone.

The project involved the release chapter by chapter of a text delivered story in game that story has grown a little and the original 6 chapters now stand at a re-edited 21 chapters about 105k words it's still not finished.

There's also a short-hand "/set" command to enable them all: "/set journeys 1"
I just ran it on DI :)

The two missing ones where supposed to be in the 'hood, or maybe Kirel (the only remnant of it is in the SDL: nb01JourneyCloth1Vis, nb01JourneyCloth2Vis).
I don't know where the journey door was supposed to be. Maybe it's the Shell in Tokotah... who knows what was the original project with it and the GZ ?

I started coding this project based on J'Kla's designs back when there were no age building tools yet and all we could modify were the Python files. That was about 6 years ago and at the time it must have seemed pretty clever. From the current perspective however the implementation is rather crude. Not something I would feel particularly proud of if it were released now. Sure, it worked in its own crude way but don't expect it to integrate smoothly. For even though we started with the unused city cloths, in the end many additional core Python files had to be adapted for each new puzzle we created.

The puzzles btw were personal, stored inside the player's vault chronicles. If you were playing the game you would see minor changes in existing ages that other players could not see (MQO style). Not my idea of persistence in a multiplayer environment but again there was little choice.

Anyway, to revive this project you would have to rewrite most of it. Personally I am not interested but I can provide the old UU files if anyone wants to give it a try.

In some ways the story has moved on but the thought of doing something that embeds in ages we allready have kind of appeals.

I can understand why D'Lanor has moved on and to be fair I was lowering his fine standards squeezing blood from a very dry stone (UU). But with the tools we have now we should be able to do something good.

The basic theory that we built the project on I believe is still valid.

IIRC, the original Journey was 10 clothes, throughout all the Ages, and the only Bahro door was in Kemo (which was only accessible via the 'hood). I think they changed to the current 7 clothes approach before all 10 of the original clothes were available and hooked up, so nobody knows exactly what was planned to happen when you entered the Bahro cave.

That does make sens, most of the journeys have ten hand meshes, so ten possible states. Phil also used the Kemo door, and no other door is mentioned in the DRC journals.
Books to Gahreesen, Kemo and Teledahn were in the linking chamber of the 'hood. Maybe you were supposed to link to Kadish through the City Gallery.
I guess that's one more of Cyan's unfinished project.

Probably not truely unfinished by Cyan. But more unfinished by Ubi. Ubi's drive was to have a single player game in advance of the multi player game. So Cyan was forced by Ubi to change the game to add the single player aspect.

Those cloths work in a strange way though, you can get up to 6 segments of the cloth glow even though there are only 5 cloths in the city. You get credit for one cloth when you finish the main journey at the Cleft, at the same time as getting the Cleft book.
