Problem: Uru Crashes After I Open My Age

Well, another day another problem! Here's what's been happening: I open my Age in my Relto bookshelf, click the panel, hear the linking noise, see the bottom status bar going up and about halfway through the screen goes black and...and...I'm in the Desktop Age. No error message, nada. Any clue what's going on?
I can't think that I've changed anything recently. The one possible lead is that I had a problem earlier where I would pull out the book where I *thought* my Age was stored and then it would be stuck in "pulled out of the shelf position", but no open book would pop up to click the linking panel of. But I checked the ULM and sure enough my Age was not stored in that book at all--which is odd, since I don't recall ever removing it. That may be extraneous, but I thought it might be helpful to mention. So, can I retrieve an error log for you somewhere? Thanks!

Last week I experienced the same thing as you as far as pulling the book from the shelf. It would slide out, and then Uru would just sit there. I could move my mouse around, but not do anything. I had to use the Task Manager to shut Uru down. After 3 times of this, and trying the following: Rebooting the computer, removing my personal Age, putting the Age back, etc. Nothing worked.
So I uninstalled the ULM, and then reinstalled it. That cured it for me. Uru stopped leaving me trapped at the book shelf.

Since I have the ULM install program saved and since it only took a minute to uninstall / reinstall, you might try it yourself.

Jennifer .... just check that you have a unique Sequence Prefix for your new Age... if you have already created one age...and this is another age with the same Sequence Prefix...Uru chrashes during loading the age ... (and deletes some (but not all) of the new age files in the process...so you get a message saying "some files are corrupt or missing".)
(If you crash to desktop, sometimes you don't see this message...).
You can check and see if this what is causing your problem by looking in the /dat folder after Uru crashes ... and check that all the necessary files for your new age are still there... (.sum, .age, .fni, .prp etc.)

Andy.... I'm just guessing, but I think this may also have been your problem (I noticed you had created AndysOffice2) which probably had the same Sequence Prefix as AndysOffice... ??? (only a guess... but based on the fact that I KEEP doing it myself ...DOH! ... it's so easy to forget about the Sequence Prefix when you start creating additional ages ... or a new version of an existing age but with a new age name. If you make a new version of an existing age, and give it a new name you need to either give it a new Sequence Prefix or completely remove all the files the 'old' version of the age that has the same Sequence Prefix).

I had the same problem with Paah'kwehNew (I was using the same Blender file as Paah'kweh but renamed it to Paah'kwehNew, made all the new additions and corrections and then exported it as Paah'kwehNew without removing the Paah'kweh files from the /dat folder. I spent about 2 hours trying to find what was wrong...went to bed...then woke up in the morning and was reading some other post and saw the words "Sequence Prefix" ...and ..BANG... I suddenly realised what was going wrong...

No, I had created my sequence number 5052. Nothing else had that number.


However! I just remembered something else! Jennifer you might want to check this!!

This wasn't the book sticking, this was: I would crash to the desktop: reason; The mainroom page was missing from my book!

Somehow, when I first tried to make the age, I deleted the mainroom page. Lucky for me, I had only made a few things, so I simply added the page, made sure it was called mainroom, then went back to the first layer and gave each object the additional logic property of the mainroom location. Normally you don't have to do that, as anything you create will be linked automatically to the mainroom page, unless you change the name of that page to something else, or you add pages, in which case you have to select the object and give it that additional property of linking it to the different named page, or new page.

Now, there was one other thing: spawn or linkin point!

I remember that I wanted to move mine, so I had deleted my spawn point (and by the way, you HAVE to put one in! It does not put it in for you!). Anyways, I forgot to go back and do that. So after I exported my Age, everytime I tried to link in from Relto, I would instead link to the Black Age!!

So try checking on this stuff too.

Thanks a ton for the quick advice guys! I just tried a few of your suggestions before I'm leaving for class, but no luck so far.
(Here's what I've looked into)
1. Tried creating a new link-in point--thought I might have deleted it when I replaced my original plane with a new-and-improved mesh. No effect...
2. Checked for Mainroom--the box named mainroom is still there and the file carbo_District_mainRoom.prp exists as well.
3. Checked what files I have in the /dat folder; I'm not sure if I have them all, since other ULM Ages seem to have more files, but I suspect that this is because they are much more advanced than mine.

Mmmmm 'kay. Let's sum up.

Go to layer 3 of your Age where you created you "Book". Click on the biggest box while in Object mode. Click on the purple smiliey face. Look down in the panel and check your Sequence Prefix. Default is 100, you don't want that. Make sure it's bigger, random number. I changed mine to 5101 for my first training age. Don't go hog wild though and put in number too big like in the millions and billions.
Leave the rest alone for now.
Now click on the first little box. It should have the following properties:

Page 0
Name mainroom
type 0
hide 0

Name can be changed to something else, but if you do that, if I remember right, you have to tell each object you build the name of this page.

click on the next little box. It should have the following:

Page -1
Name textures
hide 0
type 8

click on the next little box (should be the last for now)

Page -2
Name builtin
hide 0
type 8


Okay? Check on that.

Now, click on layer 2.

Check to make sure you have a linkin point. it should be somewhere in there and says LinkinPointDefault.
Now hold down your shift key and click on layer 1. So you should have layers 1 and 2 selected. That way you can make sure your linkin point is within your Age and in a resonable place (IE near the ground, not inside a wall, etc.)

The log you pasted in your post looks okay, meaning you are exporting okay. The files you named are the right ones. Make sure you copy and past them in the dat folder of Uru CC.

Sorry if this sounds condencending, just trying to make sure you understand what I'm talking about.

Next: Installation. We've had some Maintainers having problems using the ULM because of Flymode. I'd suggest if you have Flymode installed that you removed it. You may have to reinstall Uru CC all over again, then the ULM. You can use Flymode, but I believe it has to be the last thing installed. I could be wrong about that, but I do remember it has to do with the order you've installed things.

Hope it works out for you. If not, post again, and one of the more experienced people here can help you again hopefully.

Surely it's best practice to use registered numbers, especially if you are downloading other ages from the ULM.... you could have a downloaded age with the same "random number" that you are using on one of your ages? (It's not like it costs anything to get the registered numbers...???). That would cause you problems...
