Thoughts on VR and Uru

Anything that isn't directly related to Age Creation but that might be interesting to Age developers.

Hey guys. Just wanted to share a few pictures of the latest version of Kadish. I think I'll keep posting these from time to time for those interested, without making it too repetitive either.

Anyway... I'm currently working very hard on understanding how to do correct lighting - this results in a very strange version of the Age... the colors are very far from the original Uru look, but I think it's nice to see an "alternative" Kadish without the ominous purple fog.

As you can see, I haven't yet put the ambient light in the forest - it just looks bad, so for now it's completely dark, save for a few lanterns... (and normalmapping makes shadows so much better on the stone surfaces !)
Fortunately, I brought a flashlight with me - this keeps some of the darkness at bay. But that place is spooky, brrr...

(oh, and in VR I'm literally holding the flashlight in my hand - the light is emitted by the controller. Just so fun ! :D )
It gets better once you get to the light puzzle, though.

And things look less stressful once you're out in the open...

(those huge shadows actually come from the trees in the distance)
This place is also surprisingly a lot greener than in the original game...

All those trees with green bark nearby realistically reflect a lot of light towards the pyramid area. And it even works for moving objects like the big ball on the top of the building. Cool ! :)

(okay, to be perfectly honest, the time it requires to setup all the lighting is a pain in the... But the results are worth it).

Now, let's continue inside the pyramid...

Still some renovations to be done in this one, but I really love how the glowing line in the ceiling lights up the entrance.

Proceeding through to the pillars puzzles... It's dark down there ! Best turn the flashlight back on. (didn't have time to setup the lighting down there, actually)

Oh, and look closely at the brick walls... It's no longer a flat texture there, it's real tangible blocks ! (Well, not really. It's parallax occlusion mapping - but it sure feels like real bricks in VR)

Let's skip ahead to the vault interior... Pitch black, save for the flashlight (heh, what did you expect).

By the way, the engine can even simulate the way light bounces off when you shine the flashlight at a wall - which is why you can still see the left side of the picture even though it's not directly lit :P

Anyway. Still have a lot of tweaking to do, but I'm slowly learning how it all works.

Oh, and one final shot... A lot of people told me how watching movies in a VR theater is awesome. Well, it's not as cracked up as they all say - especially since the Vive is quite heavy (other devices like the google daydream are probably better suited for this). Regardless, it's still fun.

(Yup, that's totally Westworld playing on a cinema screen inside Sharper's office - I just couldn't resist)

That's all for today. Hope it was entertaining ! :D

Hi everyone!

I just bought my 1st VR Headset. This will be the 1st game to play with it. Hope I can get help here in case I'll be needing one. :D :D

Oh, this VR experiment won't be released soon, and right now no Myst title is compatible with VR. However you might want to have a look at Obduction - it supports Oculus and soon should work with the HTC Vive.
(what VR headset are you using, by the way ? :) )

That's a good question.

Right now ? Port the whole Ages Beyond Myst game to the new engine, with updated graphics. Just because I'm having fun doing it, and exploring the result. (the engine is Unity by the way. Unreal's rendering is a bit more powerful, but I just hate its clunky workflow)

Later ? Well, this depends from both Cyan and the community.

In an ideal world, Cyan would allow me to release my work to the community one way or another. Then I'd add multiplayer, more eye candy, Myst V Ages, etc. Then I'd force everyone to abandon MOULa in favor of the new version
Alternatively, I would love to see the community build fan-Ages using a new, better looking engine compatible with VR. What we could maybe do is release a base "game" (which would only include core gameplay elements and a Nexus), on which you could download and play fan-made content. Maybe even add multiplayer to it (kind of what Deep Island does currently).
...Then force everyone to ditch Plasma completely \o/ (yeah, I kindof hate Plasma)

Those are my dreams, at least. Once I get one or two Ages working flawlessly with good visuals, I'll probably send it to Cyan and see what they can allow me to do with it.

But if people here are motivated to build fan-Ages on Unity with VR support, maybe we could setup some sort of pipeline to release fanmade environments. That would require a lot of involvement from the community, though
