I have to agree with a lot of what Dustin just said here: Right now Shards are more appealing in many ways. In every way that he described them.
Even once (if) Cyan finally gets around to releasing MOUL:a's server code, I've got a feeling that people will still want to flock to private Shards, simply because we're still waiting on being able to add/modify anything for MOUL:a
Being able to log back into the cavern with MOUL:a had a lot of people very excited. But since that time, the amount of log on's has dropped quite a bit. There's nothing new, and any questions about that is pretty much met with: be patient, we're doing this in our spare time.
The frustrating part of it being the sheer number of people here that can add just small things to MOUL:a right now is staggering: A note, another journal, clothing.....these things take only a little bit of time to create and add to the game (compared to making a whole Age of course). There could be several new "items" added to the cavern every single week.
Of course there is the problem of who decides what get's added, etc, etc, and then the circular argument of Cyan only having a couple of guys in their spare time getting all these things dumped on them to put into the game.
It's no wonder people flock to shards. I certainly can't blame them and understand it myself. I mean how can Cyan compete with that? They can't. At least not if things stay the way they are.
What's really frustrating is having their plugin........I can make things for MOUL:a right now. I can even convert Fan Ages over to MOUL:a right now for people that don't have Max......but why go through all that trouble if nothing is going to be added to MOUL:a any time soon? Easier to make stuff in Blender, or yah, with Max and then convert it over with Dustin's Drizzle, and then people can enjoy it on their Alcugs shard.
