Belford on Uru's Cancellation

Postby Robert The Rebuilder » Wed Mar 19, 2008 12:51 pm

I just now came across a well-written suggestion for life beyond Uru's cancellation by Andrew Plotkin, a.k.a. belford:

http://gameshelf.jmac.org/2008/02/myst- ... ncell.html

It pleads the case for a fan-run Uru, citing GoW's progress in age creation as the key.

You can also find it on Gamasutra:

Forgive me if this has been posted elsewhere.

Well done, belford!
Can we rebuild it? Yes, we can - here's how.

Yes, that article has been linked and even reposted quite a bit. Glad you liked it.

I am working on a followup post; I'm hoping to have a rough draft tonight. Watch this forum. :)

Well, to me it was pretty obvious after Dr Watson's speech that that was where Cyan was heading. They were getting ready to hand over the torch. And Season 2: Rise of the Guilds was going to make that happen. I don't think they were expecting more than 2 seasons anyway. So they would have made us self supporting by the end of season 2. The cancellation of season 2 was a blow which now makes this much harder but it might still happen.

The real question is this:

If the fans ran things, what would be deemed "cannon"?

Merely what we like, or what Cyan supports? Things would be FAR too chaotic if fans controlled EVERY aspect of the game. Yet there must be a point for Explorers and Cyantists to meet half-way. A system of checks for which the world remains stable yet progress is made by both parties.

I dunno what this path would be, but a COMPLETELY fan-run Uru isn't very likely to be it. At the very least, the Guilds should manage how gameplay moves.

All dialogue is cut with Cyan, and all we can do is speculate with no basis..
Personally I think I'll just stay out of these discussions until we have any solid infos from Cyan.
