My Absence

Postby Lontahv » Sat Jul 05, 2008 4:44 am

Ok, not sure if anyone's noticed no new posts from me but here's my situation (seems to now be under control):

Well, the night of the 3rd I was freeingup some space on my HDD (deleting some linux partitions after backing stuff up) and I came across what appears to be corrupted-sector.

My drive has always been good (it's a 4 year old Seagate 160GB) and this sector just appeared (it wasn't there a few months ago when I last checked that partition). So I looked online and found that this could be(is) warning that your HDD will die. Well, tht HDD happens to contain EVERYTHING that I've ever done as a age writer plus other things--photos etc.(2 years of non-backed-up data) so I can't take the risk to start up that drive until I (I can read data on it... for now) get backup and a replacement drive and copy the contents on to that.

So, just letting you people know I'll be a way for few days (maybe a week)--or at least kinda away (i'm on a little green laptop right now--OLPC  ).

So, hopefully late today I'll be able to order two new SATA 250 GIG Seagates. Newegg has very good delivery speeds and I've reinstalled windows lots of times before so I'm betting I'll be bck sooner rather than later (hopefully with all the previous data  ).

P.S. Don't do anything too fun until I'm back. ;)

EDIT: When exactly does the RAD judging start (don't want to have to give up my spot)?

Also, I have tons of other comps (mostly from around 1999) and the forum doesn't display right on their web-browsers... hence the little laptop (very cool 8-) but very small :P )

Please forgive the off-topicness of this post... but I've been dying to know: What is Sugar like? Would it work well as a Window Manager for a really old computer with very little RAM running Linux? Sugar is available in the Hardy Ubuntu repositories, but I've been wary of installing it beside GNOME without knowing exactly what I'm doing. Do you find it useful enough even to warrant testing it?

</end questioning>

On topic: I had an HD die on me a while back and went through a long painful venture to get limited amounts of my data back (luckily I got both of my Pahts Shells from it after it had died). Hope to see you back around soon.

Hmm, I have another window-manager installed (xfce--don't use it much--just installed it) and the speed seems about the same.

Sugar is very unique. It's really quite nice when you get used to it (I'm now on my desktop comp with the HDD disconnected and running the newest Ubuntu live-cd). Let me put it this way with Sugar, I don't think you'll get to like it unless you have the green laptop running it and you are "forced" to get used to it.

But, it's really cool. I think It'd be cool to get a taste of it (it does run really slow on a image that you run on ubuntu and don't boot).

I like the part where if you press [CTRL]+C it pops up your "frame" and saves it as a temp 'file' and sets it to the default paste buffer (you can select which copy to paste but the default acts as normal).
Lots of cool stuff (a drawing tablet... not programmed into the hardware yet though) and really hi-qual camera. The whole thing is in an nice little cute green and white hard case. Keyboard is a bit small (great for the target people though--younger kids). The screen is really hi-res and is readable in sunlight (actually more readable than with the back-light).

If people don't know what I'm talking about you can look here:

Well, all in all a great travel thing (I actually get 2 1/2 hours of Batt life... WHOOT (this is with constant using of it)).

I'll call that the end of my message for now. 8-)
