maybe following the Latin, if it were a female star.

Well, in Latin novus, a, um is an adjective, so it can change its gender to be masculine, feminine, or neuter depending on the noun which it describes.
You could have:
"Silla nova" (a new chair) (feminine)
"Equus novus" (a new horse) (masculine)
"autocinetum novum" (a new car) (neuter)
Latin is just an awesome language. :)

*flees the declensions*

I could never memorize those things. Honestly, who conjugates their nouns?!

But declensions are what make Latin so interesting! I love the fact that with them you can shuffle your words around in any order and yet still have the same meaning as always. And you also get all these delicious little variations of familiar words. Like if we your name were declined in Latin, you could also be referred to as "Paradoctis," "Paradoctem," "Paradocti" etc., depending on what sort of function it was serving. Wouldn't that be cool? I wish Jennifer was as easy to decline; I guess I could tack an "a" on the end and change the J to an I so that I could be "Iennifera" or "Ienniferam" or "Ienniferae." Ah, Latin is so beautiful...

Funny that the meaning of Riven's name has been pointed out, but not Rime, which is actually a word. Look it up:

Rime: Ice that is opaque, milky and crystalline ice forming on vertical and horizontal surfaces by the freezing of supercooled water.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_rime

Very fitting indeed.

I LOVE that stuff!!!
I hadn't thought about the word for a long time.
At least a few times each winter I get to see rime up close. It truly turns the world into a faerie tale.

Rime was actually what came to mind when Aloys wrote:
Personally I'm not much of a fan of creating names based only on existing words just because it gives the name some 'sense', because there's always a risk that: 1) the name doesn't end sounding too cool, or even nice.

Rime has an appropriate meaning, yes, but it just makes me think of nursery rhymes. :) I did that Riven was a great name though...
