First Draft of the Pavilion

Welp, here's what I was looking at for the pavilion. Now bear in mind that this is a "first draft" sketch, meant to be changed. That's what concept art is for, making changes before the modeling begins. ;) So, I'd appreciate any suggestions that you guys might have for how to improve this building. Or, if you have a different Japanese-themed design that you think might work better, post a picture or a description and I'll try it out. :) I have also posted this picture in our box.net account under Concept Art.

And before I drew the above sketch, I designed the landscape...Again, this is rough stuff, easily changed. Suggestions?

It very much reminds me of tea houses Jenn!
I've never seen a 2 story tea house so that's 100% orginal thinking on your part!
I really like it being 2 stories like that, makes seeing across and down into that lovely valley easier as well as allowing more visitors to enjoy it at one time. Very well thought through and drawn as far as I can tell. I also think that the style you chose will compliment the ERC. It is not duplicating the other's style but echoing it and I like that approach.
At this point I cant say that I have any critisims. I really like the way you expressed the landscaping in the sketch of the pavillion. It has a lot of good elements of Japanes garden design without going overboard.
One thing that might be awesome to have as you cross the bridge to the pavillion is a moss and rock trail.
You already show stepping stones. Instead of gravel or grout in between the stones moss would be nourished. It makes a very soft path and it welcomes the visitor with a deep plush carpet to tread on.
that and... I <3 moss and lichen LOL
Thanks for continuing to do such great things Jenn!

You know, I think you're right...With just rocks and gravel, it looks too barren. We need some nice fuzzy moss and half-ferns...more lush looking!

Hehe, sorry to disappoint, but the structure's general shape was drawn from other pavilion pictures that I looked at while trying to get a genuine Japanese look.
Here are three other pavilions with similar looks:

Well, since nobody has suggested any major changes in the pavilion design, we'll keep it and I'll start modeling. :) (Sorry Dakro, if you want to model the pavilion you'll have to fight me for it :D )

Excellent, some close up views of the construction...I was wondering how it was supposed to look underneath the eaves. :) Got any other close-ups of the buildings?

Sure, here's a few roof samples. They are scaled down, feel free to ask if you need higher res.
Roofs are complicated multi-layered affairs, rather like victorian dresses with several petticoats.

Note that this last one, under renovation, is the same building as the second link you posted
