Linking question

Postby GPNMilano » Sat Apr 26, 2008 2:18 am

Wanted to know if this was at all possible. I've been working on an age that has two instances. One is a current state, and the other is the past of the age. The basic idea is that it is a scientific hall, where its inhabitants were experimenting with time travel. When the experiment went cacca, it destroyed the building, leaving it in its current state, but created vortexes inside of the temple in various rooms, connecting the past with the present.

The idea being that the only way to go deeper into the temple till you reach the end, where the experiment took place and the "time machine"rests, is to travel between the two instances, as the present temple, rubble blocks your advancement, and in the past rooms are closed off by doors.

My question is it possible to create link regions, similar to the PoTS route to Myst, where you step into the region, and are linked to another part of the same temple, or the second instance.

Yes, it is possible. This tutorial shows how to attach a region to Python. viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1550

Then all you have to do is add the Python code for linking (or fake linking).

While the device has been determined completely safe, the enrichment centre has not. Do not touch the operational end of the vortex. Do not look directly into the operational end of the vortex. Do not submerge the vortex in water, not even partially... :9

Sounds like a cool concept - can't wait to see it! Here's hoping for puzzles that allows you to clear some paths through subtle timestream alterations - like reading in a present day journal about how somebody barred a door to keep the squeebles out and then going to the past and clearing the squeebles a path to where they apparently were heading all the time they pestered that somebody... :7

(So, do we in the end get a portal back to before the accident, so we might try to warn about it?) :9

Is the age "memory conservative" enough to permit keeping both instances in the same prp and just translate the player over, without any loading? -T'would be neat if that's what you had in mind. :)
