A Plea For Hosting

Postby andylegate » Fri Mar 07, 2008 6:29 pm

Okay....got a large problem here.

Over at the Maintiners, we can't host any Ages that can be downloaded by the ULM because it causes our server to crash. Don't know why, the ULM FTP works great and talks to the server just fine. I uploaded my test files today that way, and nothing bad happened. All the Age files loaded up on the server just fine.

It's when someone loads up their ULM and sees my Age book, when they click on it and then click download, BAM it crashes our server. That's the main reason I have not put Camp Bravo up on the ULM.

Forgetting about this was a major oversite on my part, I forgot we were not going to be able to host our own Age files.

Now, I've searched, and searched the web, and the only hosting that's free is all web based, file storage too small, or they give you a lot, but no FTP'ing is allowed, unless you pay.

Now I'd be willing to pay for server space that I can use for mine and the Maintainer Ages, but, unfortunately it's the weekend and I don't have the money in the bank to pay for it. Not until Monday, which is a day after the deadline for the RAD.

Which by the way, HELLO!!! I posted that the RAD ULM is NOT working!!! the ulm.hbyte.net is fine, but contestlibrary.hbyte.net will NOT let you submit anything right now. It keeps giving you a 404 error eveytime you go to submit your Age info.

Anyway, is there anyone out there that knows of a free FTP site that's hidden for some reason? Or someone that is willing to host our Age for the Contest, and knows that the ULM works with their server?

I use the same trick that Lonatavh uses, logon to google and create a new email (you don't have to actually use this email), then when you logon to google the next time around go to the Page Creator, and upload your files there.

Best of all its FREE

If you're talking about the document area in Google (yes I have an account with google) it won't do any good as the file size is limited to 10MB.

Andy:

I can host your files - I have plenty of space. So now the question is, how to send me the files? You can email me the files; I'll send you my address via PM.
Can we rebuild it? Yes, we can - here's how.

I can host too. I have several gigs free on two FTP servers (running on Windows 2003 Server). I can give you an FTP account so you can upload the files yourself.

Grog: but ULM will not read that, therefore it won't help this situation.

But you can just upload individual files and point ULM there?

Not really, I don't know the inner workings of it, but I don't think that'd work >>

The ULM requires FTP downloading for Ages. If you store you Age at a site that does not support FTP or does not allow your account to FTP unless you upgrade (pay money), then you are going to be in trouble when a person opens up their ULM to download your Age: it won't work.

If you open up the ULM, and click on Public Library Submissions, you'll see in the window it pops up, that in the lower left hand cornner that it's asking you for the FTP upload and download addresses, sorta like: ftp://ftp.guildofmaintainers.org
The upload part is if you plane on having the ULM upload your files for you, but the download address is all important. Then of course you have the username and password you use to access your FTP space. With out this, the ULM can not download your Ages as far as I know.
