Hmm, I could have sworn that there was at least one version of the linking panels like that. Let me go look...

The original Myst game had the rough-edged, floating linking panels. Riven changed it rectangular, flattened it on the page, centered it in the middle of the page, and added the the burn in effect at the start. Exile made the panels almost square and smaller, but kept the burn in effects. Revelations went back to rectangular and dropped the burn in effect. End of Ages made them take up half the page (what few linking books there were.) And Uru is, well, Uru with its static linking panels.
Really, no two games have portrayed linking panels the same. Although you are right in that most of the linking books have it flat on the page.
