UPDATE: I uploaded the latest version of this age - see the original post for the link.

This new version now features a restored version of Dakro's "Stair To The Moon" bridge, courtesy of Jojon - who painstakingly whittled down the polygons to a reasonable size, grouped all the countless objects according to their texture, and improved the lighting conditions of the age as well. This also features wonderful new signs posted by Ametist which identify the plant species and - if appropriate - the world from which it came and the original explorer who provided the plant.

Here's some previews of what you'll see when you visit the age:

Release 5 is now available. Changes include:
  • Improved ocean visuals
  • Water sounds
  • Northern cliff has detail texture (courtesy of Jennifer P's Hawaii volcanic rock photos)
  • Help for people experiencing temporary screen freezes while in this age:
    • Wavesets have a longer refresh rate
    • PRP file has been decompiled and recompiled

The download link is in the original post. Enjoy

[EDIT] Whoops - forgot to include a screenshot:

Fishies!

Age is filling up nicely, at its own pace. :)
(..and I don't refer to the prettified sea coming up to drown us. :P)

Question: This is supposed to be a jungle, more or less, right? (With clearings made for non-indigenous flora, presumeably)
Are there any plans on how to pull this off for such a large age, espcially since we do not yet have cluster groups thingummies? Will it remain free roam, or will explorers be mostly restricted to the paths, so that the deep forest beyond them can be faked with billboards?

You're right that this will eventually be a jungle age. Unfortunately, as you pointed out, we don't have clustering capability in the (main branch of the) plug-in yet, so this will be a later goal. For now, we're bringing in plants from other ages and presenting them arboretum-style.

Also, there will be buildings and outside sculptures featuring artifacts 'restored' by explorers (hence the title of the age). If only we can find an architect for the exploration restoration center building...

I recall seing two design sketches for the centre: one functionalistic- and one oriental style. Did anyone ever settle on any proposal to develop?
Has anyone heard from any of the ER councillors recently, at all? :7

Wow, the audio really makes the age come alive, btw!

I notice that you ditched the waveset for the ocean, in favour of layeranimation.
I've had some amount of success, in the past, with a brushed metal texture for a distant ocean. I might try a texture replacement later, in the ERC age and see whether that works. :7
I have, by the way, in other games seen some really convincing water, using the very same technique with two textures scrolling in opposite directions, but with normal maps, instead of colour ones, so if we can figure out how to use Plasma's normalmaps, we may be able to get really decent results.

Yeah, I had to ditch the waveset because the generated environment map didn't look right unless you were one meter above the surface of the water, and in one exact spot. I realize that's the limitation of environment maps in general, so I went with a different approach. If you have a sea texture that would look better than the current one, by all means - have at it! (Once ametist has finished, of course)

Regarding the sketches - there was no decision made yet. Although Jennifer had sent me a couple PMs, the others have not chimed in yet. Once I muster up the energy (and time), I'll compose a new thread asking for a vote between the candidate sketches, inviting Jennifer and anyone willing to participate.

Then we just need to find someone to model the thing, and we'll finally have an ERC in our ERC age! :D
